How important is saving up for a house to you right now?

If people know the few ways of paying mortgages off quickly, and having rental income work for you, then people would see the benefit of getting into a property as soon as they can. Real estate can be very lucrative if you play the game right...

I own a home in NYC. Got lucky when I bought it. In the last 3 years valve went up by 150k.

Keyword, lucky. Congrats on the increased value btw, that's great!

However, It's no surprise that more than half of NYCers are renting.

Unfortunately, the rent situation is beyond ridiculous. 1BR soaring to $1700/month in unfavorable areas in The Bronx.

I have friends who live in various parts of USA wishing to move to NYC and I warn them constantly that the cost of living is a nightmare unless you're making serious bank. And even still, who wants to pay $2000+ rent for a one bedroom, which is slowly becoming the norm.

Designing/ building my own home back in Nigeria. My father has some land so the plan is to move out there eventually.

Very important. Buying a house in or around Boston in out of the question, so I'm just grinding until I have enough for a down payment on a condo in a decent area. No kids and no wife. Only $3k left for college loans to be paid off.

I would not be opposed to getting TF out of this area either, as much as I love the geography, sports teams, hospitals, etc. The people are

Pretty sure I get $65K from my grandfather's estate which should help.

100K of touchable money > 100K of equity

this don't sound right, but even if it was, most are not saving that $100k

also, how many of yall are really as mobile as yall say yall are? Im not trying to argue rent vs buy all heavy, but the notion that youre more mobile by renting doesn't seem to be all that correct considering 1) you have to pay off the end of the lease to get out- or the penalty, 2) the home you own can be sold or rented out, 3)I don't hear about all this moving you plan on being able to do:nerd:

Reminds me of my co worker who doesn't want to get her masters (job would pay for it) because she would have to payout of pocket if she left for another job before the timeframe of the hours spent in class weren't paid back (its like 3 weeks if I recall)...She been saying that for 4 years, still aint move and there's been 2 hiring freezes.

Home ownership & NYC is an oxymoron.

unless you wanna live in The BX.

Gentrification hitting The Bronx like a Tsunami. Good luck finding a reasonably priced home in the next 3-4 years.

nah, your overselling it, Queens still gotta get hit by the Brooklyn overflow before The Bronx starts to feel it.

Your logic is nonsensical.

But here's the proof:

$3,500/month for an apt is imminent for the "Piano District", formally known as the South Bronx.

Isn't queens already there

nah, no where near close...

longisland city is starting to boom, but you got way other more attractive neighborhoods in QB that yuppies wanna get their fangs on before they ever venture to da BX or Staten island to a smaller extent.

that piano district moniker beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeen dropped and if you actually go by da south Bronx, there's no visible development going on, you wanna see gentrification?

not too far where i work in Queens.

da Bronx is no where near this type of development, its mostly speculation.

da reality is da Bronx has a hard time retaining high income earners once they move up da tax bracket, its also still da only boro that has a negative outflow of Caucasian people.
