i think the fact that a noncombatant physically climbed the ladder and ended the match by dropping the briefcase/title directly to a competitor in the ring is a fairly unprecedented situation.

Interference happens--and gives the other competitors an equal chance at victory as well in the context of MITB, as knocking one guy off the ladder doesn't inherently end the match. What happened last night is an outsider outright deciding the match for a specific participant.
