Nike Launches the Hyperdunk, its Lightest and Strongest Basketball Shoe Ever

April 7 2008
Nike and Kobe Bryant today launched the Nike Hyperdunk, Nike's (NYSE: NKE) lightest and strongest basketball shoe ever and one of the many superior, lightweight performance product innovations the company unveiled to support athletes from over 100 countries who will compete for gold in 32 sports in Beijingthis summer.

"Our performance product for Beijing is some of the best work Nike has ever done," said Nike President and CEO Mark Parker. "The Nike Hyperdunkis a prime example of our commitment to deliver extraordinary innovation and lightweight performance product to the world's best athletes. Every gramcounts in competition. Athletes need superior lightweight footwear and apparel that they can compete in with confidence and that's exactly what we'vecreated for them."

"The Nike Hyperdunk is extremely lightweight, strong and responsive to give a real advantage on court," saidKobe.

Nike's lightest and strongest basketball shoe owes its existence to Nike's revolutionary Flywire technology as it made its transition from track spikesto basketball. Flywire is the innovation driving Nike's strongest and lightest footwear. Super-strong nylon filaments provide precise support akin to thesuspension cables in a bridge, and allow a radical reduction in weight with material only where it's needed for structure.

Rigorous testing was required to translate the technology into basketball. In running, the typical forces are straight ahead, but in basketball, footwear mustaccommodate a 200-pound basketball player landing on his feet with upwards of 2000 pounds of force. Then there's lateral forces with side to side cuttingand 45-degree lateral moves which all require exact stability in the upper. In Nike Sports Research Lab (NSRL) testing, basketball wear-testers cut with theball in an early prototype as minimal as a ballet slipper, yet the shoe held up. It didn't "tube-sock" as researchers call it - the shoedidn't roll over athletes' ankles. Instead, it supports them ensuring they don't invert their ankles.

Before testing with athletes, the NSRL developed something they called "The Roman Sandal." Simply board and straps, the researchers developed theprototype to see exactly where the shoe needed support to determine the Flywire placement. As NSRL researcher Matt Nurse explains, "We figured,'What's the bare minimum the shoe can be and still work?' Now the designers could literally wrap it in plastic wrap and we'd know it wouldwork."

But, the Nike Hyperdunk's designer Eric Avar did far more than that. He created a shoe with the style of Nike'sclassic basketball footwear from the original Air Flight Huarache in the early '90s to the Huarache 2K4. The Nike Hyperdunk's upper is encased in a webof Flywire filaments. As work on it evolved, so did the outsole. The design and research team saw that with a more flexible midsole and outsole, a Flywireupper has a more dynamic fit. The shoe now marries Flywire with Nike's other new cutting-edge technology, Lunarlite foam, the super light springycushioning in the forefoot, and Zoom Air in the heel. A small keyhole at the ankle ensures the upper stays with the leg in those hard-angle cuts, and the flexgrooves between each toe allow players to articulate and flex each toe for added stability, flexibility and comfort. At just 13 ounces, the Nike Hyperdunkweighs three ounces less than the average basketball shoe.

Thanks for this....I searched for new info on the old one and its nowhere to be found. Hopefully we can get some release dates for gr..pe's..qs..and such.

GR release date is july 27th..all the rest you wont find out about until shortly before they release.

Looks like an amazing basketball shoe for a great price, I don't understand why such a "technologically advanced" shoe would retail for 110, lessthan what current sig shoes run for. I'll be copping a pair of these for summer ball no matter the price. The Laker color-way is sooooo clean, but I'dsettle for any of them

There are some rumors going around that the 48 quickstrikes that just dropped will be releasing later in the summer without the glass case.

Nike really screwed over alot of people with the Hyperdunk release.
Between the shadyness of HoH to the botched handling of the release at Kb24.com

^^^agree,
if they can throw the rest of the US a bone and give us a Team Colorway GR-!%% or Regional Colorway that would be awesome, but i dont expect it.
NikeID?????? That would be nice!

so i was shopping at cabazon outlet today and saw some guy wearing the gr black/white hyperdunks...i must they looked very nice.

ANY1 KNOW IF THE (BLACK/YELLOW/PURPLE) AND (WHITE/PURPLE/YELLOW) KOBE HYPERDUNKS THAT RELEASED @ HOH WILL EVENTUALLY BE A GENERAL RELEASE OR WILL THEY MAKEMORE AVAILABLE FOR SALE???.....I HEARD SOMETHING THAT THE 1S RELEASED WERE PROMO SAMPLES AND THAT MORE SHOULD BE RELEASED BUT WITHOUT THE GLASS CASE???...ANY1HAVE INFO ON THIS....THANKS

These are growing on me. I just wish they weren't such a high cut shoe....

I figure they'll be here Thursday, since they're only coming across town. I'll post pics as soon as I can.

Damn, I wish they weren't SO rare... I want to hoop in them! It's a ridiculous concept to me... shoes you can't/shouldn't wear. Hmmm... A"dilemma" I'll gladly accept.

Congrats to everyone else who got theirs!

Just got my confirmation e-mail for some sz 12 purple joints. But I was trippin, cause I was order #21. I thought the 12's would be gone by then.

I feel ya. It's a crapload of dough for a pair of kicks. It's really the fact there are, supposedly, only the 48 pairs to be released that soldme. I figured it was worth a shot. That and the fact that because of the HOH release on Friday, we had a sneak peak at what people are valuing these at on thebay and elsewhere around the net. Those numbers are blowing my mind. I guess, ultimately, people's perception of value is what it is. Whether or not thatperceived value is a tribute to shoes as an artform or whether it's just capitalism, I'm not really sure. Probably more-so the latter... but that'sa whole other discussion for a whole other thread...
