I woke up one morning and all of my files on my laptop were gone...but when I click on the properties of the folders where they were stored it still shows that they are in there, but for some reason I just cannot see them?  If I do a search the specific folder where the pictures from that day or event will show up, but the files/images will not display in the folder.

Has anybody encountered this problem?  I have thousands of pictures and a lot of work files or such that would be great to be able to access.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

*I will hook any person who can fix this issue and help me access these files with a SWOOSH account.

reboot and start in safe mode

then do a "system restore" to sometime last week (should be in your control panel)

what that will do is put your computer back to the settings you had on that date

after that you should be good

I already did the system restore to some earlier points...thanks for the suggestion, but it was still hiding the files.  I am guessing this was a dormant virus or something.

Let me try the malware removal link.  Thanks.

your files are prob hidden. if you check the amount of hrd drive space on your comp and that hasnt changed then thats what it is. if you have xp open up a windows folder click on "oganize" in the upper left hand area then select "folder and search options" click on the view tab on the popup that comes up. select "show hidden files and folders" if all your files show up you possible have a malware. figure out what malware you have.

most likely download this:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/anti-virus/rkill and run it

then download this:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/anti-virus/malwarebytes-anti-malware and do a full scan and remove the infected files

then to unhide your files download this:

http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/unhide.exe

My mother had this happen to her computer. It was just that the files and folders were hidden. Just go to my computer > Tools in the system bar > Folder Options > View Tab > And under hidden files and folder just select show hidden files and folders. a

My mother didnt know how that got changed cuz she doesnt knows comps like that. But thats what worked for her. If that doesnt work then like its been said, maybe you have a malware virus. I use http://www.malwarebytes.org/. It works great and is free, just install and then run the update to get the malware definitions up to date and run a scan then restart the comp and you should be good.

Dang I missed this. I just sent an email to someone asking me about the virus. It was the same solution as MATT. LOL

Below is the eamil...

Download RKill and Malewarebyte and run it on your computer.

Click on the box that says - "Download Now. Cnet Secure Download".

RKill:

Malewarebyte:

http://download.cnet.com/...000-8022_4-10804572.html

Run RKILL FIRST. It will be a command prompt box. It will tell you when it's completed.

Once you do that Run the MalWareBytes, Perform a full scan. This will take awhile but it will detect all viruses you may have. You will want to delete all the viruses that is found (It will prompt and ask if you want them to be removed)

What OS are you running? If you are running XP, Vista or 7, I suggest that you download this free Microsoft Antivirus Software from Microsoft....
