The MMA Thread: DON'T ASK 4 STREAMS & NO GIFS- Cannonier, Imavov, Reyes, Rosas on NOW

I forgot tito was cyborg's manager. Such a dumb decision on her part.

I wonder how many people actually watch the invicta fights on fight pass. I thought it was weird when I first saw advertising saying you could see their events on fight pass.

Weidman is jokes

On Lombard's suspension: "I don't how he got caught for anything just watching his last fight, he didn't look that jacked"

I'll give my two reasons why that won't happen.

1. Weidman isn't a big enough draw (unless they can manufacture the same type of build up as DC/Jones).

2. Weidman can't stay healthy.

Honestly, JBJ would probably win that fight. He could neutralize Weidman's wrestling. And stand up would result in Jones picking him apart from afar with those long arms. The good thing for Weidman is Jones packs no power. So he could theoretically catch him.

Yeah I don't think the fight would happen soon either (I think it could happen if Weidman kept winning), but the fact that Weidman is calling him out in a sense is pretty cool. You don't see champs do that too often. Weidman doesn't hold anything back he just says what's on his mind

Hendricks called out Weidman.

Bendo wanted a super fight with GSP.

They do it all the time.

I think the only two folks would clamor for at this point is JBJ/Velazquez and Aldo/LW Champ (eh...it was a hot idea when Pettis was champ).

It seems like they have a mutually beneficial business relationship.

Like what was already said, prior to TUF 20, Invicta "allowed" their straw weight division to sign to UFC. Trust me, Shannon Knapp wasn't altruistically letting her bread and butter go.

The only reason Cyborg is in Invicta is the random drug testing and lack of 145 women's division. If she signs to UFC, she's going to need to submit to those drug tests and consistently cut weight to 135, which she has not proven she can.

But honestly, the money is in the UFC. She's never going to have as big a drawing fight as she will with Rousey.
Cyborg isn't in UFC strictly because of Tito. UFC and Cyborg had an agreement where she'd be under contract with them but could fight in Invicta until she could make it down to 135 lbs. Then Tito started his crap holding press conferences saying she'd die if she made it to 135 lbs.

If professional mma becomes legal in NY, I think that we get JBJ/Weidman. Just because UFC has been trying for years to get into NY and have a show at MSG. They can't go there and not have a huge card with big fights. The card would have to rival UFC 100.

All the time? I don't know about that, but yeah it's cool to see the champs outright look for a challenge like that

Damn, Khabib said Conor will smash Jose and Weidman said he is picking against Aldo for the first time

Wow, I wonder who else is picking Conor

It doesn't happen all the time but recently it feels like a lot of the champs have been talking about super fights. They want big money fights and some are tired of cutting and wanna move up in weight (Hendricks & maybe Benson).

Jones has talked about Cain, Weidman has been talking about a super fight with Jones since the 1st or 2nd Silva fight, Hendricks wanted Weidman, Benson wanted GSP, Pettis and Aldo both wanted to fight each other, and Dillashaw has been talking about wanting Aldo.

UFC had a contract with her due to the Strike Force buy out. Dana wasn't really interested in women's MMA initially. It wasn't until Rhousey began generate buzz that he changed his mind and brought her over to the UFC and created the women's 135.

Dana has gone on record saying he'd be willing to give her a contract if she can make 135 since it would mean a match against Rhousey, which would probably be the biggest drawing women's MMA fight.

You're right. There was the initial Issue with Tito and the weight cut.

Tito isn't her manager anymore.

There's no money in a catch weight fight since there isn't a 145 division. If Cyborg wins the catch weight fight, there's nothing to do with Cyborg thereafter.

If she beats Rhonda, she makes Rhousey look weak, whereas if Cyborg wins a 135 title shot then they can book her in fights with Cupcake, Cat, etc.

It's that simple. Dana is willing to sign her with Shannon Knapps blessing.

Didn't consider this point, which is an excellent one. There's no way Cyborg will make a permanent move to 135 so what would she even do after their fight?

If they did even fight it would be at 140 anyway

If Cyborg won I don't think they would do any other fights at catchweight

Didn't think about this at all...

^^^Updated the post Vince quoted.

There's no money in signing Cyborg and allowing her to fight catch weight fights. The UFC would have to get 115 and 135 fighters to go up in weight or sign one and done contracts with other women fighters in order to create competition/fights for Cyborg. It makes 0 financial sense. Not to say there isn't value in Cyborg's name. She's obviously laid a path of destruction. But it's not like Uncle Dana is huge on women's MMA. We just got a 115 division, which was pretty much canabiling Invicta's. This set up a TUF season and Invicta's division had semi decent talent.

However...recent events may change the situation. Rhonda has almost cleaned out her division (after Correia). The only two possible fights afterward ATM are Holly Holms(who would get blitzed) and a possible third fight with Miesha.

They could take a "super fight" approach with Rhousey who could become a bigger star due to movie roles. If so, they could book catch-weight matches against Cyborg, Gina Carano (if they can convince her to come back), Laila Ali, etc.

Weidman is the middleweight champ who dethroned Anderson. New Yorker, Handsome bastard etc... There's plenty to work with.

He's got a line of killers at 185 waiting for him though so he should really focus on that.

Not saying he didn't stop Anderson twice or won a decisive victory over Machida. He's just not there as a draw...yet.

Right now...who do you guys think are the top draws? Not who is the best fighter, best champ, etc.

IMO, ATM, Rhousey, Nick Diaz, JBJ and Connor McGregor are their biggest draws.

I feel like the UFC hasn't put their best foot at filling the void of GSP, Brock Lesnar, Tito Ortiz, Chuck Lidell, Rampage Jackson and B.J. Penn as high profile ambassadors. Once those guys left or were on the decline and the 40+ cards a year kind of killed the UFC buzz some what.

What I was saying is that if it wasn't for Tito being her manager back then Cyborg would've been under contract with Zuffa/UFC already. The same deal that she reportedly signed with Zuffa is basically the same agreement they had in place when Tito was her manager. Cyborg would be under contract with Zuffa, but they would give her permission to fight elsewhere (Invicta) until she could prove she could make 135 lbs. Then they'd make the fight with Rousey. UFC even offered to pay for Dolce's services to help her get down to weight.

But Tito *****ed and moaned saying it had to be at 140 lbs and when UFC didn't budge Cyborg asked and was granted her release from her contract. It wasn't until Tito resigned as her manager that UFC and Cyborg really started talking again. I think Fertitta mentioned that he was talking to her about a contract and Cyborg said UFC invited her to a ppv recently. The ball only started rolling once Tito was out of the picture. He was the major hold up.
