Wait, "Unstoppable Colussus?"

Apparently, to stop a the rampaging Juggernaut, who recently picked up one of The Serpent's hammers in Fear Itself #2, longtime X-Man, Colossus takes on the Cain Marko's former mantle as the bearer of the Cyttorak gem. According to writer Kieron Gillen, big-time nice guy Piotr Rasputin will be making a deal with the demon Cyttorak in order to gain the power necessary to save the his fellow X-Men and the rest of San Francisco from a rampaging Cain Marko, now called The Breaker of Stone.

To read Gillen's take on it, this is one of those "road to hell," etc. etc. "good intentions" etc. etc. situations where a hero makes a momentary great sacrifice that will have some potentially negative ramifications down the road:

“Colossus is a character who's always leaned towards sacrificial,” he reminds. “He's the sort of person who'll give up something for someone else, no matter what the cost. And this is that abstractly good character leading him into a very bad place.

The first thought that came into my head when the teaser image of Colossus putting on Juggernaut's helmet was the "Unstoppable" arc from Joss Whedon's run on Astonishing X-Men (which I actually thought was called "Breakworld" until a minute ago). In that story, an unwitting Colossus was feared as the potential destroyer of the planet Breakworld, whose inhabitants sent the warrior Ord to Earth to eradicate the mutant threat, thus circumventing their prophesied destruction.

What was remarkable about that story was the clash between the character's longstanding gentleness and compassion and knowing what Piotr was fully capable of if circumstances called for it. In that story, it's revealed that the prophecy was just a ruse, but when the stakes were down, Colossus was willing to take seize control of the whole planet in order to protect the Earth.

Do I want A vs. X? Meh. Not sure yet.
