    History

    Original NikeTalk thread.

Kevin Durant's seventh signature shoe brought back the midsole strap from the KD II and KD IV, a feature that many fans of the line were happy to see and that Durant himself requested1. Nike continued the overall "weather" theme that has become a staple of the KD line. A successful follow-up to the very popular KD VI was very important to keep the momentum of the line going strong.

The construction of the shoe brought some previously unused materials to a KD signature shoe. For the first time, Hyperposite is used on the heel area for extra strength while the front of the shoe is made of mesh and dynamic Flywire.

The names of KD's family members are imprinted on the underside of the strap. Wanda (his mother), Tony (his brother), Barbara (his grandmother) and Wayne (his father) are all listed. On the outsole, KD's home state of Maryland is visible. If you look closely enough, you'll see that KD's number 35 imprinted on the strap is made up of 5 number 7's (5x7=35!).

The base price of the KD VII was $150, with limited colorways being marked up to $170. Again, fans have voiced their complaints with the ever-increasing price of KD's signature shoes.

Like the KD VI, the KD VII received a unique branded box to set it apart from other Nike basketball shoes. Weather patterns were used on a blue and grey box.

The KD VII was unveiled June 25, 2014 at the Newseum in Washington, D.C. with host Ahmad Rashad talking to KD and Leo Chang about the shoe and answering some fan questions.

Contract Negotiations: Under Armour and Nike

One interesting subplot to the KD VII was that Durant's contract with Nike was expiring after the shoe had already launched. Under Armour stepped up and made a massive offer of $265 to $285 million over 10 years2. Nike countered with an undisclosed offer and KD remained with Nike3. Fans were unsure of which direction KD would end up going since Under Armour is based in his home state of Maryland and KD was seemingly very impressed with their pitch. If KD had gone over to UA, it seems likely that Nike would have liquidated all of the upcoming KD VII shoes that had already been made in Nike factories.

    Ad Campaign: The Baddest

A new ad campaign referred to KD as "The Baddest" (stylized as Badd35t) debuted during the 2014 NBA Draft4.

    October 2014: Fractured foot

It was announced5 on October 13 that KD had suffered a Jones fracture in his right foot and would miss the start of the NBA season. Prior to this injury, he had only missed 6 games of his NBA career. Durant returned to the Thunder on December 2 for the away game against the New Orleans Pelicans and scored 27 points in 30 minutes of action6. He missed a total of 17 games to start the season and the Thunder slumped to a 5-12 record7 without KD and Russell Westbrook who also missed 14 of those 17 games8.

December 2014: Return to action wearing the KD VI

When KD returned to action, he decided to lace up the KD VI instead of the VII. Nike spokesperson Brian Strong explained why.9

    March 2015: Bone Graft Surgery

After suffering continuing pain in his surgically repaired foot, it was determined that Durant's earlier Jones fracture surgery was not successful and that he needed to undergo bone graft surgery. The surgery was performed on March 31, 2015 and marked the end of KD's season. He finished with a statline of 25.4 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 4.1 assists in the 27 games he played during the season10. Durant is expected to return to basketball activity in 4 to 6 months. He ended up wearing the KD VII on two occasions: the All-Star pair in the NBA All-Star Game and the Aunt Pearl pair in a game vs. the Dallas Mavericks on February 19.
