Top 10 Most Scandalous College Basketball Coaches

by LostLettermen » Thu May 14, 2009 10:17 pm

With allegations against USC's Tim Floyd coming out of the woodwork, we wondered: "Who are the most scandalous college basketball coaches ever?"

Here's our Top 10:

10. Bob Huggins

He infamously went four years without graduating a single player and Cincinnati was placed on probation in 1998 for a lack of institutional control. Then came his DUI arrest in 2004. Forced out at UC, Huggins is back on his feet at his alma mater of West Virginia after a stop at K-State, where the Mountaineers are considered an early favorite to make the 2010 Final Four.

9. Jim Harrick

Dogged by rumors of NCAA violations at UCLA and Rhode Island (where he landed Lamar Odom), Harrick was busted at Georgia after his son allegedly gave player Tony Cole an "A" for a class he never attended. Harrick most recently coached the NBDL's Bakersfield Jam from 2006-07 before leaving for personal reasons.

8. Clem Haskins

After leading Minnesota to its first-ever Final Four in 1997, things came crashing down on Haskins a year later when academic advisor Jan Gangelhoff claimed she had written over 400 papers and take-home tests for Haskins' players. Forced to resign, Haskins has been out of coaching since. Where is he now? Living on his family's farm in Campbellsville, Kentucky.

7. Kevin Mackey

Leading Cleveland State to a shocking 1986 tournament win over Indiana, Mackey was on the fast track to coaching stardom. But four years later he was caught on camera at a crack house with a prostitute under his arm. He is currently a scout for the Indiana Pacers.

6. Todd Bozeman

The youngest coach ever (29) to lead his team to the Sweet 16 - with the help of Jason Kidd - Bozeman was exiled from the NCAA for an unprecedented 8 years for paying the parents of recruit Jelani Gardner $30,000. Now at Morgan State, Bozeman led the Bears to their first NCAA bid in 2009.

5. Steve Fisher

The man who assembled the Fab Five said he was unaware booster Ed Martin gave his players $600,000, despite Martin being so close to the program he stayed at the team hotel. The program imploded when Fisher was ousted in 1997. Fisher has never been punished by the NCAA and served as San Diego State head coach since 1999.

4. Eddie Sutton

Sutton's stay at UK will forever be remembered for his assistant sending prep star Chris Mills $1,000 in cash through the mail, which spilled out during delivery in 1988. Rumors also flew that UK player and his own son, Sean, took the SAT for prized recruit Eric Manuel - though it was never proven. UK was hit with a two-year postseason ban and Sutton resigned. He most recently coached San Francisco in 2008.

3. Dana Kirk

He led Memphis to the 1985 Final Four, but was out a year later. At his 1988 trial for tax evasion, government witnesses testified he funneled money from boosters to players and even scalped tickets for 5 times face value. He eventually served four months in prison. Kirk is retired and still lives in Memphis.

2. Jerry Tarkanian

"The Shark" is like The Godfather of college basketball - feared by everyone. With a wet towel in hand, he was always under NCAA investigation and had major violations at all three of his stops. But with an endless supply of JuCos like Larry Johnson, there was no stopping him. He won the 1990 title at UNLV and also a $2.5 million case against the NCAA for harassment in '98. He resides in Fresno.

1. Dave Bliss

It's hands-down the ugliest scandal in NCAA basketball history. After the murder of Baylor player Patrick Dennehy, it was revealed that Bliss paid players, hid results of positive drug tests and concocted a story that Dennehy was a drug dealer to deflect criticism of Bliss. He was hit with a 10-year show clause penalty. Oddly enough, he is now president of Interactive Occupational Training, an online education company in Lakewood, CO.

WildK, I been meanin to ask you for a minute now. While back local show out here in Portland had a writer on from Memphis. Can't remember his name now,but he was sayin some stuff about Calipari that he has a trenchcoat group that goes around intimidating writers and announcers that say or question anythingabout Cal. You hear of any of this? Is this common knowledge?

The writer guy made it sound like Cal had friggin mob ties and sh*^.
He said they can never pin anything on him or Wes, but heknows they do shady stuff somehow. The writer was a lawyer, or a former lawyer who went into sports journalism and they came up to him and started askingwhere he took the barr at and stuff, like they were gonna have him disbarred.

Any of this true?

Yeah... Everything Bliss had going on in Waco was grimy...

The whole Dotson/Dennehy situation took the cake though...

You know there are some shady-%%@ coaches when Bob Huggins barely even cracks the top 10.
