Can’t recall another year where so much trash came out. Mumble rap. Lil this. Lil that. IG rappers turned memes going viral on the radio.

Just my 0.02. Looking forward to 2018. Hopefully we get blessed with some classics.

Jay-Z, Future, Drake, Meek, Ross, Kendrick, 2Chains, Sean, Cyhi, Rapsody, Em, Raekwon... just off top. Not terrible, just don’t pay attention to all the nonsense.

In keeping with what airthompson airthompson said, it seems like that’s the problem with more and more people these days. There’s so much focus on the weak material that stellar performances are easily forgotten about.

We got dope material from all those artists and more, but somehow the focus is on mumble rap. Sometimes cats have to get out of their own way.

It was actually the best year in rap this decade in that whatever began in late 2015/early 2016 with Yachty finally jumped the shark to a large portion of consumers and lyricism is slowly coming back. It's cool every now and then but it got to the point (and still is at the point) where people just doing stupid **** to get on quickly.

A lot of great projects dropped but with social media and everyone having to have a hot take, people put more energy into what they hate than what they like. Just like every year, there were a wide range of releases and if you didn't find something you like, you just might not be a rap fan.

I think some people want rap to be all lyrical and no ignorance. Which never has been the case and never will be.

What evidence do you have, to back up your statement? You mentioned social media, but no actual music (songs, albums, artist, etc.)

What made this year, better than a 2010 or 2011?

People are getting tired of the Lil Pump/Yachty/etc. type acts and thus artists like Joyner Lucas, Rapsody, CyHi, etc. are prospering and set to have big 2018s. Also it sets the stage for more new lyrical rappers to get shine the more that people get tired of mumble rap.

I don't care enough to prove anything I said. Just my perspective.

  not even close. 2017 was a fantastic year for rap, especially if you’re not looking at top 40 garbage to fill your music needs. Before I finally made the streaming jump, I bought more music in 2017 than I had since 2005. One thing that helped was artists basically dropping stuff out of nowhere. Whether mixtapes or albums, ‘17 was a dope year for rap.

One of the best years actually

This

I feel that this year there was so much rap music for everyone to enjoy.

Fire mumble rap
Fire meme rap
Fire rapidy raps
Fire old folks rap
Fire mainstream rap
Fire punchline rap
Fire emo rap

I kind of agree with the original poster. More than anything, as a 32 year old, I gave up on rap a few years ago. If I was 19 again in the dorms, I might be more ambitious to dig through message boards and mixtape sites for "not top 40" heat, but I honestly don't care anymore. Like the fabolous/lox mixtape... I'm sure it's dope, but I'm cool with their stuff from 10-15 years ago, and don't have the desire to continue with old rappers as they continue on their out of style careers at this point. Someone in here said all they remember from this year was DAMN (and the KRIT album)- I'm pretty much the same. I may catch buzz from a handful of other albums or other big singles throughout the year. But I legit don't give a **** anymore. I've moved on to other genres too and at least glad I made the jump at 32 rather than 52 and would've said how did I miss this other stuff my whole life.

Stopped reading right there. If you gave up on the rap genre, it’s difficult to put much stock in your opinion, as it can hardly be thought to accurately represent what’s going on.
