About to finish up my 2nd year. Any accountants on NT?

How fast did it take to find a job when you graduated?
Will your GPA have a big influence when applying for jobs? I know it does for the Big4, but how about smaller companies?
Most importantly, do y'all enjoy your job?

Kinda getting cold feet. My GPA is okay, but not where I want it to be. Also think this will be my worst semester yet (grade wise)

It's stressful but depending on who you work with it can be kinda fun or enjoyable along with the perks

started as a temp but got brought on board for a smaller company. it's been a good year now since i've started. the fun came when the learning curve was at its peak but it dies off with the cycle repeating itself month after month. probably will stick around for another year so i can put 2 years of accounting work on my resume.

my gpa is buns, no prior accounting experience, majored in economics, and didn't even interview for the job

I got my job from on-campus interviews, so I accepted a job offer in Nov. 2011 starting in July 2012 and I graduated in May 2012.

Without having an prior experience or internships, your GPA weighs pretty heavily. Usually I've mostly seen minimum 3.0 GPA requirement, not only for big 4, but also smaller regional firms.

So far, at 1.5 years in, I like it so far. I'm in audit so I'm constantly moving to different clients every couple of weeks so that doesn't make work too regular and mundane. You get to meet a lot different people and I like to think of each client I work with a networking opportunity ie. possible positions in the future

My school requires you to finish at least 150 hours of internship in an Accounting or Finance related field in order to receive your degree. Got my résumé out there to some companies, but they're only recruiting juniors. Just want to find an entry level position straight out of college and work my way up the ladder.

I know I ain't the only one looking ahead to post-graduation already... Haha.

Yeah, I feel you. I just always question whether or not if it's for me. I do it quite often. I have no passion for anything, no musical talents, or athletic abilities, so a plain dude like me picked the major that is allegedly "easy" to find a job in.

Just stick it out for now, would be my advice. I'm in the same boat as you bruh.

Honestly, I'm killing it in my accounting courses. I'm getting A's on the exams with about 2-3 hours of studying per exam. It comes pretty easy for me. Just my other courses that are fckin up my GPA...   

So yeah, just stressin' over my slipping GPA... Also been told that Accounting is a lame and stressful jobs, but others have told me they love it. lol... 

I heard a lot of good things from other individuals who majored in accounting. I seen the starting salary and was like I would actually like to do audits and bookkeeping. What other classes they require you to take? I've heard accounting major is better then majoring in finance, as with finance you're limited to what you can do.

Depends on your university. I have to take general education requirements (English, math) and business core requirements (finance, marketing, management, business law, etc.)

The rest are accounting courses like taxation, cost, managerial, audit, financial. I know some peeps that do auditing, they get to travel on the regular which is dope.

I've also heard the same. Been told that with accounting, you can do what finance does. But with finance, you're not able to do what an accountant. Could be a myth, though. Both majors are somewhat similar.

Been there for just over a year and a half so far, but I'm not enjoying it very much. I'm just trying to stick it out as long as I can take it before I start thinking about something else.

If your school gets recruited by Big 4, you're pretty much good to go.

I've heard horror stories about working banking hours with less pay, though.

man, i missed out on applying to the big 4 this year.

Last year during my sophomore year, i went on my school's career center site and saw that the applications for the big 4 were due in late jan/early feb so i assumed it would be the same thing this year.

I went to check this year right after new years and nothing was open. Someone told me they stopped accepting right before the new year or something 

currently intern at a f500 and i guess plan is to continue with it throughout the summer and into the fall and try to get into the big 4 during the fall recruiting, although that will be much harder.

2nd year Accy here.
I go to UIUC so Big 4 gets pushed super hard here.
My GPA is iight. More than a 3, but could definitely be better.
I'm looking at a 5 years Masters in Accy. So one more year after my Bachelors, I'll be CPA eligible.
They push it super hard at my school, as well as Big 4 pushes it.
Looking for a good place to be at the end of this year.
Maybe an internship next year, but I gotta get my GPA higher.

Yep. I'm a CPA.

6-9 mos. but I did my undergrad in Finance and not accounting.

GPA makes a difference but experience makes the biggest difference. That is what will separate you from the pack unless you are coming from an Ivy League school.

Yep, I enjoy my job in the accounting industry.

I'm an accountant. Most of the time it's fine, but there's always some @#$ hole failed investment banker client that has 0 accounting knowledge and never appreciates what you do

I'm trying to shift more towards handling accounting for a single company. HATE working with unreasonable or uncooperative clients

If you're interested, look into Cost Accounting. I randomly stumbled into this career out of college and I get nonstop emails and calls from recruiters who have a hard time finding people to fill their roles. Good cost accountants are harder to come by these days so if you like manufacturing and working with production, supply chain, and other departments, do some research.

My starting salary out of college was average but once I got that experience, my next job bumped me 40%!

Are you planning on getting your CPA? I plan on getting my certification after I'm done. Well, I'm pretty sure it's true cuz I was indecisive before on whether to major in finance or accounting. I used to work for chase before and some of the bankers majored and finance and they were like this is pretty much the most you can do with a finance degree.
