Nike Elite Versatility socks sizing

I wear a size 8.5-9 in nikes usually, I was wondering whether I should get a size M or L for these socks. I was gonna get a large but my friend told me the larges fit like really long socks. Feedback is appreciated thanks! I'm talking about these btw.

I wear 8.5 in Nikes and I've been happy with size M in my elite versality socks. HATE having socks that are too long and the heel portion ending up at my ankle area.
