A massive earthquake of 8.3 magnitude has struck close to the city of Concepcion in Chile.

The US Geological Survey said the quake struck at 0634 GMT on Saturday at a depth of 59.4km (36.9 miles).

Concepcion is the second largest city in the country, about 450km south of Santiago. There is no word yet on any casualties.

The US government said a tsunami warning has been issued for Chile, Peru and Ecuador.

Buildingsin Santiago were reported to have shaken for between 10 and 30 seconds,with the loss of electricity in some parts of the capital.

how come nobody is reporting it? only thing im seeing is the earthquake in japan that happened earlier today

SANTIAGO, Chile – An 8.3-magnitude earthquake struck southern Chile early Saturday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. A tsunami warning was issued.

The quake hit 197 miles (317 kilometers) southwest of the capital, Santiago, and at a depth of 36.9 miles (59.4 kilometers) at 3:34 a.m. (0634 GMT; 1:34 a.m. EST).

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a warning for Chile and Peru, and a less-urgent tsunami watch for Ecuador.

"An earthquake of this size has the potential to generate a destructive tsunami that can strike coastlines near the epicenter within minutes and more distant coastlines within hours," the center said.

The U.S. west coast tsunami warning center said it did not expect a tsunami along the west of the U.S. or Canada but was continuing to monitor the situation.
 
From what I'm reading, the quake was a few hundred miles offshore, so the effects won't be that bad, but something of that magnitude will do some damage. The casualties will be minimal, though imo. We'll see as more stories develop tomorrow morning.
 
Wouldn't it matter how deep within the ocean it is to really determine the effect? I thought that's what was said about the other quake today. Because the quake happened so deep below the ocean it helped offset a tidal wave or tsunami.
