Adidas drops Arenas as endorser following guilty plea

By Michael McCarthy, USA TODAY

Athletic company Adidas said Friday it was dumping longtime endorser Gilbert Arenas of the Washington Wizards following his guilty plea on felony gun charges in Washington, D.C.

The move demonstrates the short fuse that Madison Avenue now has with wayward athletic endorsers. Golf superstar Tiger Woods has been dropped by twocorporate sponsors, AT&T and Accenture, following recent allegations of his alleged extramarital affairs with multiple women.

ARENAS: Pleads guilty to felony gun charge

"In response to Gilbert Arenas' guilty plea to felony charges, Adidas has terminated its agreement with the athlete effectiveimmediately," spokeswoman Stephanie Von Allmen said in a statement. "Beyond this statement we have no further comment at this time.

Adidas initially said last week that it was "evaluating" its relationship with the 28-year old guard after NBA CommissionerDavid Stern suspended Arenas indefinitely without pay.

Arenas has pushed his signature shoe for Adidas since signing an endorsement deal in December 2003. He was one of Adidas' biggestbasketball endorsers with fellow NBA stars Dwight Howard and Tracy McGrady.

He did have a deal with Spalding but they probably have deemed him radioactive too. Gilbert's become the Michael Vick of basketball.

just becuase its gil everybody's magnifying the whole situation, don't get me wrong, what he did was wrong and he should be punished accordingly but iread a lot of stuff like ban the guy for life etc well how about other nba players who have had similar infractions or almost the same as he did like StephenJackson who fired a gun outside club when he was with Indiana or Delonte West with his gun problems as well?

a little harsh but i can see the comparasion between the two.

Its almost worse than Vick. At least Vick looked and sounded remorseful when everything came out. Gil just tried to pass it off as a joke and continued to wavethe situation in everyone's face.

depending on how long his suspension lasts; hopefully he'll get reinstated somewhere and be able to play again. Dude is way too talented to let his skills go to waste and he should get a second chance even if it's on another team. Once he puts his mistake behind him and gets back to balling on the level he's capable of I'm sure he'll get a deal with nike or one of the newer companies (Li ning, Peak, under armour)
