I think you pretty much got all the answers you are looking for.

I wouldn't suggest it for the annual fee alone but there should be other charge cards out there by Visa or Mastercard that will not have an annual fee.
Or as others said, just get a credit card with a low limit and pay it all off every month.
It is also a much better practice for the future if you are willing to pay off all your bills instead of being forced.
