LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Gunfire erupted on Thursday at a California high school in inland Kern County, a sheriff's department dispatcher said, and media reports indicated two people had been shot and the assailant arrested.
The dispatcher confirmed the shooting at Taft Union High School but gave no other details.

A California ABC affiliate reported that sheriff's deputies were going room-by-room to secure the school and that two people had been shot, but had no immediate word on their condition. It said the shooter had been apprehended by police.

The station, 23ABC News, reported that some people had called the station from inside the school, where they were hiding in closets.

TAFT, Calif. (AP) — A student was shot and wounded at a San Joaquin Valley high school Thursday and a suspect was taken into custody, officials said.
The shooting occurred about 9 a.m. at Taft Union High School, an oil and agricultural community about 120 miles northwest of Los Angeles.

The student who was shot was flown to a hospital in Bakersfield, said Ray Pruitt, spokesman for the Kern County Sheriff's Department. There was no immediate word on the victim's condition.

"We have a suspect in custody," Pruitt said, adding that the person was believed to be a student.

Pruitt said it's believed a shotgun was used in the attack.
KERO-TV Bakersfield reported that the station received phone calls from people inside the school who hid in closets.
It was not immediately clear how many students are enrolled at the high school, which teaches 9th through 12th grades.

:smh:

Edit:

I'm looking forward to seeing how the media covers this in light of the fact that this wasn't on the scale of a "massacre".

It's tragic, but no where near as sensationalist as a headline that reads "massacre in blah blah blah". With certain figures suggesting that the news media outlets actually promote these kinds of shootings by fervently reporting on them, it'll be interesting seeing how this particular tragedy is handled.

Will it get the same kind of press as Newtown/ Aurora? Is this a tragedy in the same vain as Newtown, Columbine? NRA response? Employed actors (>D)?

What I meant by my statement is that all these shootings are a result of the way they have been covering recent shootings.

Yes they have been trolling for shootings like these to happen.

They don't care about anything but their next story.

**** gun control, we need to figure out whats pushing people over the edge like this.

Well it's not Breaking News here in LA.

All regular scheduled programs are running.

**EDIT**

News just came on and Top Story is 2 teens who are in the Hospital after a house fire.

Didn't even mention the shooting in their overview of the show. This will hardly make news here.

Just mentioned it on the news for literally 30 seconds.

I'm sure this will be sensationalized by the media ONCE AGAIN which will inevitably lead to more copycats.

It's a school shooting...these things SHOULDN'T happen. Can't expect the media to not cover this.

I mean, what do you expect them (media) to do? Just go on w/ the news and not say anything?
