Any NTers ever been to Cuba?

I know a few people who visited Cuba. Very interesting from what I hear, it's like a different world out there.

I just came back from Cuba on Tuesday. Spent 4 days in Havana and one night in Varadero. I'll put up some pics later.

Haven't been personally, but I've had a few friends recently visit. No issues getting in/coming back, people were friendly. Only had some issues with some basics: No internet, no phone service, water & power at the hotel weren't consistent. Some of my friends pics:

Fly to Canada and then from there you fly to Cuba. Basically you just need to fly to a proxy country.

Havana looks beautiful, I'd love to go down there and have some cigars on the beach. I'll be in Mexico doing just that in July

I have been to Varadero many times, very affordable all inclusive resorts.

The majority of the employees at the resorts are black... So no worries there.

Day trip to Havana was fun, beaches are dope, food is pretty terrible... Swimming with dolphins was pretty sketchy... Let's just say I don't think they are popular with animal activists.

There are also many deep sea fishing opportunities... In 60 year old boats that are poorly maintained. I loved it... Added an element of danger to the trip. I would highly recommend that excursion.

So much sarcasm in this post that I don't know if you're trying be funny with the bolded line or just blatantly racist.

^^^ just a factual observation.

OP was concerned there were no black people, I saw many.

I concur, I was pretty disappointed with the food. Other things visitors will have to deal with is the lack of Internet/wifi (though I actually enjoyed being disconnected for a few days) and lack good water pressure

Finally getting around to this. Wifey surprised me with a trip to Cuba for my birthday at the end of March. We flew from NY to Miami, and from Miami we took a 40 minute charter flight to Havana. Apparently there are ways you can fly directly from NY to Havana, but those tickets would have been $500 extra per person.. We stayed in a small bed & breakfast in Old Havana which was cool. I was honestly shocked by the amount of tourists there already. At our b&b, there were people from Cali and an older couple from Jersey. There were tourists literally everywhere. The other thing that struck me was how friendly the people were, and though there was some begging, I was surprised by what people asked for. Rather than just money, people asked me for soap, shampoo, batteries, pencils, things of that nature. That's all I can think of for now. Feel free to hit me if you have any questions. I took a ton of pics, but here are a few.

How is the food bad ? I frequent Cuban restaurants locally and it tastes good. I would assume the food would be better. Anybody have a answer to this ?

have heard this complaint before...the ingredients are not as fresh or plentiful on the island (compared to the US) and rationing policies only allow so much to be used, so the food is a hit or miss...

"Most Cubans depend on monthly rations (limited amounts of deeply subsidized food) of rice, beans, coffee and a few other staple foods for their sustenance. There's also a thriving black market  for food, supplying the wealthy and the foreigners with gourmet items like blue cheese and smoked salmon smuggled in by suitcase. (I traveled to Cuba in 2003 and 2007, first on a person-to-person license and then on a freelance journalist visa. Like so many other American visitors, I was utterly bewitched by the people, the music, the rum. But I lost weight there — probably because candy bars and other snacks were so hard to come by.)"
