Since the quarantine started i noticed there was a chiropractor i went to last year, still doing business. I had never been in a car wreck or had any serious injuries but had been having reoccuring ankle pain that flares up every now and then.

On my first visit in 2019, dude analyzed my posture and told me my right hip is rotated 15 degrees forward, which is causing the left side of my body to compensate carrying the extra load, hence why it was only my left ankle. I always just assumed it was from crazy stuff i did as a teenager (skateboarding, hopping fences) so i was a little skeptical.

So he has me lay down sideways in a somewhat fetal position, places one hand on my shoulder and the other on my hip and pushes in opposite direction. This was sort of like when you twisting in a chair to crack your back, but more violently. The crack that resulted sounded 3 times as loud.

So he has me get up and start walking around, and i notice the pain which was usually a 4 on a 10 scale had dropped to 1. And its stayed there in the several months since. So that had me curious if he could work any more magic.

I let him know this time Im just looking for a tune up and i have no urgent type of aches. So the first 10 minutes or so, hes doing the basic back cracking type stuff everybody knows. Has me lay face down an exhale, then presses down into my back. Then he had me sit up and clasp my hands behind my head. Then he hooked his arms in the loops and lifted me up. At this point i had lost count of how many cracks there were, i think 15-20.

So then he has me lie down face up and starts rubbing my neck and the crazy thing he was able to predict how much each side would pop before he cracked, just from feeling my neck. After the side to side and diagonal cracks, he put his left hand at the base of my head and cradled my chin with the other hand. All the sudden he yanks backwards and pulls me back almost a foot. Knocked the wind out of me, albeit in a good way. The best way i can describe it was that it felt like 10 back cracks all at once. Top, middle, lower and the tailbone. Entering my early 30s, i think i was developing the same back pain that everybody gets as they get older...but as i walked out that day i kinda had like a de ja vu throwback feeling, literally feeling like an elementary kid. Very hard to put into words. Infact when i woke up the next morning i didnt have the usual urge to hit the snooze button and stay there an extra 15 or however minutes. Same thing this morning.

So im definitely going to try to visit this guy on a regular basis going forward. Anyone else have a chiro?

Tl:dr

but I always been skeptical of chiropractors.
not saying it’s snake oil, but I feel like all they do is crack your bones like how I crack my knuckles.

feels good for a moment, but it doesn’t fix the issue

When I got injured at work I went to chiropractor regularly for like month and a half.

I stopped after I figured out when the chiropractor would twist and pop my hips was the reason why my hips was hurting doing basic things like standing and walking. When I stopped going the pain went away.

Might just be me

never tried a chiro and doubt I will, and I have a history of spondylolisthesis (two slips last year), as well as onset spinal stenosis.

I'm still learning to alter my biomechanics and strengthen my core to try to avoid things like sciatica (radiating pain through my leg - probably similar to the description in the OP).

if interested in learning about back pain, check Back Mechanic by Dr. Stuart McGill

Chiros are witch doctors. Go to an actual doctor like an Ortho if you are having issues.

Bad chiros are witch doctors. Good chiros will save your life.

A few years ago I had a few herniated discs in my neck. It was my affecting nerves and I could hardly use my left arm. Ortho suggested operating. Would have meant recovery time and lots of drugs. I said thanks, but no thanks. Got with my buddy that is a chiro once a week for the next two months. He adjusted me and we focused on posture and other things I could do to alleviate the stress. Had me feeling good at the end of the two months and I am not dependent on getting adjusted.

Agree with second statement b/c as a patient, you can communicate with the chiro better.

I wouldn’t want to go to one blind and them say see me this many times for this many months.

I use to go to a chiro, but only when something flared up. They would reset it and everything would be fine. The problem with a chiro is, at least for me was once they put you back 'in' place you can literally set yourself right back 'out' of place almost instantly. The other thing I hated was they would do all of these corrections and scans and then give a recommendation that I should come back twice a week for a couple of months to get myself back aligned. Always felt like a medical 'sales' job to get you coming back.

Honestly I've never heard a doctor say a good word about chiropractic. Only negative, and generally in pretty strong terms.
Personally I think it's a scam. Scientifically refuted/unproven and potentially damaging.

I went to a chiro once, I just didnt like the vibe off it. I dont want to generalize all Chiros though.

I had a terrible pain in my neck. Like I couldnt even move it, I would have to move my whole Body just to look left or right.

go to the chiro, Checks posture, Does stretches, I feel slightly better. Then they send me to a room with this young fine *** perky chest clerk girl. She was beyond gorgeous. She is in there tryna sell me a monthly membership. They kept emphasizing that I need to come back or this issue will Never get Resolved and its in my best interest to set up weekly visits to get his treatment. It all felt too off for me. It was like The neck issue I came in here with was no longer the focus and it was just pressure to get me on a payment plan so I dipped.

Next 5 days I just put ice packs on my neck and stretched it myself and it went away. So glad I didnt lock in on a plan. Not saying all Chiros are Bad but I wouldnt be surprised a lot of them are only just Focused on incrementally helping your situation instead of solving it all together. More money in treating you than just fixing you.

Chiros have their place though. I think everyone's mileage will vary. There are far too many variables to just give a thumbs up or thumbs down answer. For example, a lot of chiros are trained in the same techniques that PT's are and vice versa (ie. ART, Graston)

I've always been leery of the neck cracking though. They'll be talking to you all calm and nonchalant and then bam jerk your neck to one side and then the other and be like "you feel that, that's a lot better"

You have to be vocal about it. I straight up told him one time "no need to do the neck."

damn, is he rich

what problems does he have to go that often
He has something internally wrong? Some long *** name, 3 might be pushing it but like twice a week at least. He gets his spine adjusted, tho.

I went when I was trying to figure out what was wrong with my knee (ended up seeing a rheumatologist and it was arthritis) I didn’t really like the exercise he gave me for my knee but everything else was cool. He did an adjustment which was half the reason I went. That alone was worth it

but I think any type of pain like that its better to see a physical therapist. They are the real magicians and know how to fix what’s wrong

PT + massage will do wonders

Some of these chiropractors make more money from YouTube than they do their own practice. They know what they be doin.
