Anyone been to Martinique?

So some friends and I are trying to get out of the states for New Years Eve and I found some good deals on flights to Martinique. Then I found some great deals on AirBNB for villas, so I think it's meant to be. My only worries are that I've heard they speak very little English, and I only remember basic French from taking it in high school. Also, apparently the taxis/cabs are awful and we'd have to rent cars.

Any feedback? Anyone been or know anyone that's been?

Airline just came to Baltimore and has a promo for like $400 roundtrip. Everywhere else is around $1200.
