Access to clean water is a fundamental human right. This is America but not surprised to be honest. Their governor too busy trying to uphold Jim Crow era voting restrictions and legislating women's bodies than things that people actually want them to care about.

I lived there for 4 years and when we left I never went back. Like never.

Very sad to see. Sees the Governor hates the city and rather it suffer than approve funds for it.

We live in a country more concerned about becoming a tik toker and YouTubing, as opposed to people wanting infrastructure and construction Jobs because of lack of pay. It’ll only get worse.

Doing foundation work, pipe work, etc is hard as hell plus lack of pay. These problems will only get worse nationwide…. There’s a lot of staff shortages in the construction industry

What's the core of the issue, and who's responsible for funding and fixing it? ( Not interested in what folks think it should be, asking for facts if you got it)

1. We have horrible water processing infrastructure in this country. It costs billions of dollars to upgrade and maintain the system but politicians either don't have the desire or political will to spend that kind of money on a problem they don't think is a big problem until it happens.

2. What happened in Flint and now in Jackson will likely happen other places unless #1 is addressed in a serious way.

3. The populations most at risk happened to be majority black and brown communities. Unfortunately our lives don't matter so it is harder for #1 above to happen when the victims aren't White. However, as I said in #2 this will happen everywhere soon.

4. Republican Governors are to blame. The federal government has allocated billions of dollars to upgrade the country's water system but the state government is responsible for actually deploying those Funds. States with Republican leadership have used government funds for other things because the communities most impacted are Black, Brown and/or poor.

So Tate Reeves. How do we effectively put pressure on him instead of just using our own money for... Not even a bandaid, more like a "bless your heart".

This is why I don’t care about global warming. The elite are trying to preserve the earth for them.

Sadly it takes the media and publicity on the problem to make them change course. The money is probably already gone given Tate's past actions with federal funds. He used Covid releated relief funds for Mississippi prisons. Using our posts on social media is the best course of action as it will make national media figures ask Tate the tough questions. The thing these politicians hate is being called out and embarrassed. Sadly because Jackson has a Black Mayor, Tate will use the Hurricane Katrina playbook. Republican state house blames Democrat led cities for "wasting" money that they never received. We need to push back on this with everything we have.

every time these kind of discussions are had, people do nothing but rehash issues that have literally been here since the inception of this country. Yet nobody ever really wants a big overhaul of this ****ery.

it always boils down to whateva bull**** reasoning politicians can't do something, but the same people will continue to push for & support the same system of politics. ****in incredible

So apparently y’all didn’t listen then.

Methodical Management Methodical Management can we set up some kind of support?

Like can we get this “supporter” money into places we want?

Direct donations are always preferable for the sake of speed and efficiency, so we'd rather encourage everyone to donate directly than collect funds on behalf of an organization working in Jackson, then donate it a couple of weeks later minus the PayPal fees.

In years past, when we've raised money for disaster relief efforts, we've been able to access group fundraising tools for organizations with boots on the ground.

In this case, the city government appears to be recommending the following fund: https://secure.actblue.com/donate/mississippirapidresponsecoalition

If you're local and you're aware of a different nonprofit doing highly effective work that also has access to group fundraising tools, we can put something together.

Even if we can't track/verify donations, we can still use this thread to help encourage contributions.

We don't have a lot left in the supporter fund for 2022 since we've already made a donation this year, but we can try to organize donation matching if we have some means of verification. If we can get a few people together who are willing to match all member contributions (if only to a certain limit), it could add up quickly.

They're telling people to shower with their mouths closed.

Mississippi is known to misuse Federal Funds for nonsense. Look at what they used TANF money on...

They (conservatives) are suing, and will probably win, to strip citizens of the rights to Federally funded state programs. So in a year, Tate Reeves will have the power to kick whatever black people off of Medicaid, TANF, or food assistance programs

If people want to read about what led to this:

This is a state-level created disaster, people need to stay focused on what is happening on the state level and not make silly takes that start with "We gave money to Ukraine"
