prior to manny pacquiao's prominence, he was the PI's most famous boxer in the late 80s to mid 90s. he was a 2 time world champion in two weight categories, wba bantamweight and wbc featherweight classes.

the last news i heard from this once famous boxer he has prize money problems with the promoter, which remained unresolved for many years.

guess what? we were doing our groceries with my fam today at costco south san francisco and who do we see at the baggage counter?

king louie! :wow:

he still had his id on his uniform with name "louie" on it. my heart sank when he placed the groceries in the cart when i learned he was working there. how in the world did a millionaire in the past end up here? i had the chance to talk to him for a couple of minutes, he looked great and slim at age 39...he's now based in the US. he was in high spirits and didn't look tired lifting grocery bags. i learned that his problems with his promoter remains unresolved till this day.

still wanted to talk to him a little longer but there were alot of people at the queue. said our goodbyes and he gave my son a high five!

sorry for the rant. i still couldn't believe what i just experienced and while going out, i said a prayer for him.

Met him too when my wife was working at Filipino-American Report in SF. Very nice guy. I don't think you should feel sorry for him at all, but see him as kind of an inspiration though not in the traditional sense. This was a guy who fell from a very high perch and he could have used that as an excuse to give up or lose himself in depression but he didn't let it beat him or crush his spirit. Compare how he is to what's become of another pinoy boxer, Navarete, and its not even close. In a recent interview he said that he earns an honest, decent living and feels very blessed, and indeed he seemed upbeat and positive. As a psychologist, I could see the strength of character he had. It's easy to be all smiles when life is good and all the stations are featuring you and giving you props, but you find out what you're made of when life hits you with adversity. That's a real fighter for you. I do sound a bit melodramatic, but I really do admire the guy and am genuinely happy for the way he's dealt with his situation.

thanks nico! will check that out.

shame to what happened to distrito, he reminded of navarette. whatever happened to him?

crazy that this post was made. just the other day i ran into this filipino waiter at a breakfast restaraunt kind of like pancake house. i mentioned boxing, and then he started telling my friends and i how he used to be a pro boxer. his name was arnel arrozal. his glory fight, according to him was fighting freddie roach and giving him a fat uppercut, but the ref called it a headbut. i decided to check it out, and some webpage said roach won like the last 5 rounds. he also said he had a brother that was better than him (and apparently better than pacquaio) but was too into chicks. anybody remember this boxer and have a lil input?
