I've been thinking of taking up a combative discipline for quite some time. Looking around at a bunch of diff BJJ academies throughout SF and was wondering if any NTers train / could offer some recommendations. At the moment I'm leaning towards Charles Gracie academy on Taraval, mainly since it's close to my residence. Suggestions anyone?
I used to train when Cesar Garcies spot was still in Pleasant Hill. My cousin's husband trains at a spot near Ocean beach and he said it is a cool spot.
look at ralph gracie, but location does play a factor on where you train. also try bara brothers jiu jitsu. its in ocean beach by the safeway. ralph gracie is gonna be yur best bet hands down though
I know it's a drive, and I don't roll myself, but the best BJJ academies in the Bay (and the entire NorCal, for that matter) are in San Jose, Ca. We got hella good fighters comin outta here. Not all of the fighters are from here, but they all train here. Cain Velasquez, John Fitch, Cung Le, Frank Shamrock (just to name a few) all trained and fought out of San Jose. Even Herschel Walker trains here (at AKA). Just a thought.
^where? There's tons of boxing gyms in the bay area. And just because san jose has a ton of fighters coming out of AKA, Cung Les, etc does NOT mean they have the best BJJ. The best BJJ is found at pure BJJ schools ALTHOUGH Dave Camarillo is without a doubt one of the best instructors in Nor Cal. If you're in SF I recommend my school Ocean Beach Barra Brothers. Once again Carlos Sapao is the %+#%. Straight from Brazil he is a Ralph Gracie black belt and respected by ALL the icons in BJJ. Anyone and everyone who is in the know knows who Sapao is. He's been training his entire life and has dedicated his life purely to jiu jitsu.
Can anybody give me an approximate % on how much a typical BJJ session focuses on striking? Any benefits or disadvantages converting to BJJ from a boxing background?
0%. BJJ is all on the ground homie. There's almost no advantages to coming into BJJ with a boxing background. As for boxing gyms in the city there's 3rd street boxing and a couple boxing classes at various places like fight n fitness. In the peninsula there's b street boxing in san mateo and westside boxing club in san mateo as well. all of those are solid.
1) Zero striking in BJJ. It's all ground game. 2) Only if you wanna go the MMA route I wanna start going to a gym, but I'm undecided between King's (your rec) for boxing (and it's like 5 minutes from the house) or Ralph Gracie BJJ in Berkeley (10 mins from my job).

lmao. i've actually been out of training for a minute because my job relocated me to mountain view but ill be back on the mats as soon as they send me back to south san francisco.
^^LMK when you come back. Always down to meet some cool NTers I got pretty worked 2nd day... This is probably one of the better work outs I've had in a while. Too bad it's not something you can go to the gym and practice your form in front of a mirror.
i train at cesar's in pleasant hill. good place plus you can train at any affiliate gyms. can't wait to train with ronda rousey in a couple of weeks!
