Actually, I believe you can request a change. People don't realize if you lost your license there's a potential for serious consequencesif it falls in the wrong hands. Basically all it takes is a shady connect at the DMV; with someone's driver's license # you'll have access tosomeone's SSN.

My girl's wallet got stolen in a bus, half a year later she was getting calls about unpaid loans through a WaMu. She reported it and the SFPD told her itwas common case on that bus line (the line is one of the most hit in SF, 44 for anyone wondering) and that requesting a new driver's license number mayhave prevented it somehow. So I think it's possible to get a new number. Call the DMV and ask.
