With the murder rate continuing to clime in Chicago the city has turned to former gang members to help with the problem. At least 252 people have been killed in Chicago so far in 2013. In 2012 there were 506 murders in the Windy City. Most of the deaths can be attributed to gang violence. The city has spent $1 million to hire CeaseFire, a violence prevention program consisting of ex-gang members with the hope they can broker truces between gangs.

Hope it helps out.

Jesus man. That murder rate is crazy.

damn I'm going out to the Chi for a couple months next year. I'll be in the northside of Chicago but I hope things don't escalate.

Love that city man.

**** been eerily tame in my hood these last 2 weeks. my grandma said she heard a lot of shots lastnight but i didnt hear nothin. a lot of these "drillin" *** lil kids is scary tho. theyre seeing they friends drop like flies and others gettin sent away got them feelin some type of way.

"Chiraq" - not even once. How sustainable/scalable is this solution though? Seems like a band-aid on a gaping wound. Sure they can save 9 guys from going to jail and 4 from getting killed, but there are certainly countless others out there who they can't reach. The gangsters interviewed still seem comfortable with glorifying violence, so while it will avoid individual incidents, it probably won't get rid of the overall cultural and economic issues at the heart of the problem.

I wish we'd quit actin like it really is anything like Iraq at all... 500 ppl of how ,any million lovin n the city of Chicago... It's a fraction of a percent prolly and in very isolated area generally...

Avoid the projects and late nights in unfamiliar areas and ur good..

Trust me.. Lived between Philly n reading pa the past 4 yrs... The numbers r uglyyyy here too but I ain't got no worries.

Choppers n the closet in case god forbid sum punk breaks in but other than that mind my business.. Stay low key. No problems

I worry everyday about my friends and family who live out there in the chi. **** is just outta control man. I hope the brothas out there can make a difference in turning the community around out there for the better man. My prayers go out to everyone out there in the struggle.

i applaud the effort but just think its going to work..

i like the southside b/c its an area i spent a lot of time growing up in but i hope my remaining family members there move, especially since the older members of my family have passed or completely left it behind.

im so glad my mom moved out of Ashburn and back to her old neighborhood Beverly. i know ashburn isnt as bad as a lot of other places on the southside but it was not a place for my mom and sister to be staying.

my mom was taking care of my ill grandmother who passed in May, which was nice but everyone breathed a sigh of relief when she left.

I really hate how this is how the outside world has to perceive our city. As people have said, very isolated problem (geographically), and just a huge black eye to those communities that have plenty of good people in them.

well it's great that you feel safe, but that's not the point. The point is to minimize the outrageous murderrate in those isolated areas; and while more Americans are killed here in a single city than U.S soldiers in Iraq, the comparison remains valid.

I hope the initiative is effective but I honestly doubt it will be.

I have a bad feeling that conservatives find a way to identify the search for solutions to these problems as a waste of time/money.

Won't solve anything. We all know what the real problem is, but every politician is still too afraid to say anything out of fear of losing votes.

According to that article, at least 758 murders have been reported in the city of Chicago since the beginning of 2012. At the rate this is going, that number will reach 1000 by the end of the year. I know that the murder rate is lower then other cities like Oakland, New Orleans, Baltimore and St Louis, but the volume of murders in Chicago is dumbfounding. I wouldn't call that a isolated problem at all.

For my folks more educated on Chicago's demographics then me, what is the cause of this violence? Is it the tearing down of the projects? Is it a lack of police presence? Is it the family structure in the city? Is it simply poverty? I'm curious to know why folks in Chicago are slaughtering each other in crazy volumes, that is not seen in any cities of a similar size.

man, I hate when dudes do this. Just say what the hell it is. Not everybody knows and some would love to learn.

also to dude who mentioned Oakland. Oakland is bad, but it's not as bad as chicago as far as the murder rate goes. I wouldn't be able to speak for Bmore and the other cities.

It involves a little something I like to call "daddy sticking around and helping to raise his kids". It's a bit of a problem in the black community.

But what do I know. I'm just a racist with wild and crazy notions about the importance of intact families.
