Converting .wav to .mp3

what is the best converter? I've used the itunes converter and the files I convert to mp3 never sound as good as others, I tried converting to lame but when I then upload the lame mp3 to myspace it still sounds like crap. I know myspace sound quality isn't good but I still hear other songs on myspace that sound pretty good, what is the trick? any help would be greatly appreaciated.
