Does this intramural ref have a point? vol. or just vent about intramural refs

So we're playing in the championship game of our school's co-rec intramural league, and we're down 21-16 towards the end of the second half. I get the ball under the bucket, take a power dribble, and score while some dude is swiping at me and the ball. I hear a whistle and head to the line for the and-1, thinking we're about to go into half time down by 2 or 3.
Except the ref called a JUMP BALL! He claimed that the guy got mutual possession of the ball as I was going up with it. I asked him how that was possible when he didn't even impede the progress of the ball enough to stop me from scoring? He just kept saying the guy got his hand on the ball. Either way the call stood, they came down and hit a shot and we went into halftime down by 7 and eventually lost.

So is there any possibility of that being the right call? If I take a power dribble and score, could someone have really had possession of the ball in between the dribble and the ball going in the basket? Keep in mind that this wasn't a case of the ball popping out and somehow landing in the basket, it was a very standard layup off the backboard.

I don't think a jump ball should've been called if you wrestled the ball out and scored it. From my understanding of a jump ball throughout the years, he would've had to be holding the ball until your feet landed on the ground.

This thread should just turn into an intramural ref venting post. We would play the soccer team with another soccer player reffing the game. Almost incited riots. Led to a Bobby Knightesque technical for one of my friends who threw a chair on the court.

Same thing actually with our game, ref was on their men's league team and they gave him a championship t-shirt after the game.

I don't even know why I still argue with these clowns. This jump ball call was probably the worst refereeing decision I've ever been a part of. It didn't even enter my mind that he might call a jump ball.

They are just being true to the NBA.

Rigging the game with calls in favor of the team they want to win, like NBA refs have been doing the past decade and some change.

The worst refs are also the most hot headed and egotistical so try to keep your head and not argue anything.

I coach in the high school rec league team and two days ago we played the Quarterfinals with only 5 guys against the #1 squad. 3rd quarter, we're up by 3, other coach, who had argued every call all game, gets T'd up, he loses it, gets T'd up again and ejected, one of their players gets T'd up reacting to the coach being thrown up, 2 more players get T'd up for arguing the last Technical. That's 5 Technicals in the span of 30 seconds. Ref straight spazzed out with the T's.

We shoot 10 free throws, make 9, go up by 12 as well as get possession. Needless to say we got that W. Ref had to be escorted out by the cops though. Price you pay for abusing your power.

i remember when the ref tossed out our uncle at my cousins YMCA game years ago...he wasn't even yelling he was just chilling on the wall behind the basket and was telling the ref how terrible his calls were...3 weeks later they ended up getting alone after they talked it out before my cousins other  game

I got kicked outta the league & suspended from work for spazzing on a ref for repeated noncalls (who happened to be the G.A of the center) during a game because I also ref'd and worked at the center as a student aide.  I WENT OFFFFFFFFFFFF!!!!!! KICKED THE BALL ACROSS THE COURT AND EVERYTHING.

You're right. The ref should have only called jump ball if you came back down with the ball in your hands. So either a jump ball or a travel. Horrible call by the ref if you made the basket and he called a jump ball.

Haha intramural refs for the most part are terrible, but Kingo I understand that dudes can go overboard and do make big deals out of close calls too. Some refs just seemed like they didn't know the game much though. I remember when I played intramural ball and this ref kept calling 5 seconds even when the player with the ball was moving, he'd say "you weren't going towards the hoop" smh.

I've had one of those situations in church league where it was a close game against this 'semi pro' team and they got a tough and 1 call against them, dude gets a T, someone on their bench cusses, ejection, a few of their players sarcastically laugh, multiple T's for them, I don't even know how many techs dude called but all of a sudden he's like, "Y'all done now!! Okay we got 12 free throws!" !$!! was ridiculous. Dude on our team only made like 7 but it was like a tied game previous to that with no game left.

I had a ref one time who kept calling carrying (palming) on my hesitation jumper. Literally all the other refs and some players were gathering around explaining to him, it doesn't matter if my hand goes under the ball (transitioning from the shot to the dribble) because I'm not dribbling again. He literally said, "Nope. No way. In my mind you're underneath the ball that's a violation."

Had a ref at Sheppard AFB MLK tourney who didn't like if you took 2 steps prior to layups. He was getting everybody with it but especially killed me because I was cherrypicking all day and he kept wiping the buckets away. So I got one where I slowed down and took 2 hard, loud steps while yelling, "1! 2!" and then layed up and he kicked me out the game.

Worst one was with money on the line though 2000$ for 1st place, 1500$ for second in this Native American sponsored tournament in Anadarko. It was double elimination and we were in the semifinal game (loser gets 3rd place and no prize money, both teams already have 1 L) and it's tied at the end of regulation with me guarding Johnny at like half court on the left wing a few seconds left. Dude killed his dribble with like 3 seconds left, so I just stood there vertical, son literally Dwade lunged into me from like 5ft of cushion I had given him and flopped, buzzer sounded. Yes! OT! All of a sudden, the ref who was under the basket on the play, while the other ref was literally 2 feet from us standing right behind the aciton and made new call, tweet! and comes running from around the other 8 player who likely had him blocked out and calls me for a foul with no time left. So dude got 3 fts with nobody on the line, only has to make 1 to win. It was a buyin tournament, nobody who was there couldn't have made 1 out of 3. They won that game and then the tournament. We only had 7 players so 1500 would've been 214 each, 2000 would've been 285. And yes, it was racist. We were the only team that wasn't all Native American dudes and the 2 we did have both look Mexican so we looked like a bunch of outsiders come to the local Native American tournament and try to take the spotlight and holler at the females, so the crowd and refs were against us from jump.

Then we had a squeeze 7 sweaty +@$ dudes in the Grand Prix and drive home. Nobody said !$!! the whole ride.

But I want to be a ref in intramurals one day. People with either hate me or love me because I'd ref like I play which is basically to call very little and allow all kinds of contact, even blatant fouls I'm the type who is like, "You're behind the basket dude. You weren't gonna make that anyways, you got scared, $$!!+$# up, and closed your eyes and just flung that at the rim. That's our ball up top! You ain't Dwyane Wade!"

In high school, our rec league team got so bad that the officials and people in charge sent out a mass e-mail to the coaches and refs in the league warning about a few of our players. Our two best players got kicked out and one of them turned and yelled "THATS BULL $#+%" right in front of a huge crowd of kids and parents who were waiting to play next

Definitely NOT a jump ball. Ref was trying to justify his call because he's acting diva like he doesn't make mistakes. I've had refs like that, they suck. But I've also had refs who just gave make up calls the next time down the floor.

Intramurals refs cost me team as well. #1 team going in to the 64 team tournament but we lost in the 2nd round this year (lost in title game last year). They called so many fouls in the first half against that in the 2nd half I could tell a couple calls were makeup calls. Still lost 54-51. We were down 11 at halftime primarily due to the foul calls. I almost received a T in the first half. Some officials are good; some are pitiful.

Nevertheless, I love my school's IM's. 64 team bracket to end a season? Priceless.

This post turned into "tell your story of how bad referees are." I'm in

High school rec league. Kid gets a T for dunking before the game. Kid's dad starts complaining from the stands. Ref throws out the dad, no lie. Dad didnt even say anything offensive. Other parents start getting riled up, yelling "Just let the kids play" and "get off your power trip." Ref calls the whole game and leaves before warmups are even over.
