So we're playing in the championship game of our school's co-rec intramural league, and we're down 21-16 towards the end of the second half. I get the ball under the bucket, take a power dribble, and score while some dude is swiping at me and the ball. I hear a whistle and head to the line for the and-1, thinking we're about to go into half time down by 2 or 3.
Except the ref called a JUMP BALL! He claimed that the guy got mutual possession of the ball as I was going up with it. I asked him how that was possible when he didn't even impede the progress of the ball enough to stop me from scoring? He just kept saying the guy got his hand on the ball. Either way the call stood, they came down and hit a shot and we went into halftime down by 7 and eventually lost.
So is there any possibility of that being the right call? If I take a power dribble and score, could someone have really had possession of the ball in between the dribble and the ball going in the basket? Keep in mind that this wasn't a case of the ball popping out and somehow landing in the basket, it was a very standard layup off the backboard.
