For the last few days (following the most recent set of changes), images uploaded in thumbnail view have only been casting the shadow that accompanies the overlay that usually appears for me.
Today I finally had the thought to try to carefully scroll up the page to see if it's just no longer positioned properly (since actually registering a touch at any point would just close it) and lo and behold it was indeed near the top of the thread page.
Just came across it again a few minutes ago and remembered to report it this time.
I tapped an attached thumbnail at the very bottom of a page:
Gently slid back up, and here the overlay is at the top of the page:
