External Hard Drive failed... lost almost 100 GB of music, need advice going forward and starting ov

Whatever happens even if I can't get the music off of the hard drive I will not be using that PC at the parents house anymore.

I would only really download like once in a while and load everything on my iPod.

That's why I was hoping some could help with advice going forward.

Yeah....I swear you can still extract info from the external somehow. I think a HD has to be a 100% crapped out for it to not recover.

Just get the thermaltake dock like I mentioned. It supports 3.5 and 2.5" HDs. It's also a cheaper alternative to external hard drives cause you can just buy a high quality internal, which costs a lot less, and use that dock as an external. Like mentioned, that hard drive is most likely not dead and you can easily recover data off it.

No the hard drive is not dead it turns on and lights up and everything, but it's not showing up on the computer as the F: drive like how it used to.

I will look into what you said, but I'm going to try to see if I can solve this with other methods first.

Even if I can't recover the data it's okay what can I do I just wanted advice and recommendations going forward.

I mean if you can't recover it then there's nothing to you can do.

Buy a new hard drive and re-download everything. You can invest in a SSD.

My condolences. I know this pain too.

I made a thread about my computer crashing 2 or 3 different times on here and losing my music library. Each time it was like hundreds of gigs of music gone. It took me so long to rebuild those libraries man like insanely long. NT suggested an external HD. I got one that was1 TB and later on copped another that's 3 TB for a real good sale.

The 3 TB crashed last year around March due to some virus I had wiped off my computer :smh:  Luckily it didn't take all of my music but it took a whole bunch else.

This time around I went to the manufacturer since I still had warranty but all they could do is offer me a new one or a deal to get more than one. The recovery programs I downloaded barely helped and I realized I'd basically have to go to experts/specialists who can recover damn near anything from crashed computers like the ones we see on tv and movies who stroke a few keys and then they got your social security # or the nuclear codes. Problem there is them dudes cost money.

The other option is going to the dark web but I don't have enough bit coins.

Good luck b. All I can say is from here on out when you're rebuilding your library have it backed up on multiple platforms.

Damn bro...

This super sucks :smh:

If you're in the LA area PM me... I'll try to run a recovery for you.

I'm in NYC

Any recommendations though?
I'll upload some data recovery software to my google drive later today and link you.

The data is most likely corrupted...the mbr may be damaged.

As long as there arent any audible clicks or "whirrs" when its running you should be able to get everything off it.

Leave it unplugged until I get back to you with the software.

There's a way to get music from your iPod to your computer. I have a program on my Mac that does it but I'm not 100% sure if it's available for pc. I'll check when I can.

Thanks and that would be great if you can find out.

The program I use is Ipod access. Posted the link for the windows download. Hope it works out. It's a trial so it might only let you copy a certain amount of songs but you can always get a torrent.

This has happened to me atleast twice and when it does I've taken it to a mom and pop computer fix it place and they've been able to recover and transfer all my 2TB of data into a new external Harddrive(one i've either provided or they have sold to me) I'm pretty confident your stuff is fine and can just be extracted out to a new harddrive. If you do get the data out, GET A NEW BIGGER EXTERNAL HARDDRIVE that you will BARELY use and make that your master one and keep a smaller one as the one you use more frequently. I have a 2TB that houses the movies and music and ps3games I play/watch and listen to most frequently then I have a 5TB that has double the amount of all the stuff i just listed and where i just hoard data of all types(in case of any type of catastrophe) but i only use that one to update it with the latest movie, music or game I just downloaded.

always have a backup for your backup. Sucks your not in bay area cali, these electronic mom and pop shops are everywhere, not sure how frequent they are in NYC

How much do they charge you to extract the data?

going forward make sure you got da backup squad on deck.

da external at home

da external at work

da external at da homies

da external at da parents

da external in da time capsule in da backyard

da NAS

da cloud

da backup cloud for when da cloud gets hacked for when they pull a onedrive

I paid $80 my first time but keep in mind they also had an external they sold me that they directly transferred all my "lost" stuff into, so i paid for a new external and the data transfer. I think the 2nd time it happened I already had my own external I got as a gift so I only paid like $20-$30, both times were same day pickups for me.

You definitely need to get a NAS to back up your collection. I recommend F.r.e.e.N.A.S. without the periods.
You can build your own or buy one. Basically it uses any number of hard drives, at least 4 recommended. 1 drive will be used as parity and the other drives will be storing your data. The software constantly checks for errors in your data, and the data is distributed across your drives. If one drive goes bad, it tells you to replace it, but you still keep your data.

100 GBs of music???

That's like a hundred million songs.

Unless they were FLAC files, then it's only about 10 million songs.
