This is literally the first pedestrian death after thousands of trial runs. Machine learning will only further increase efficiencies and limit risk. Have you seen Teslas truck? This is the beginning of the end.

I hope this self driving cars idea gets axed. I can already see the lawsuits being a daily thing. There's just way too much of a liability that will be at stake. You're basically putting your life in the hands of one of these things if you get one. It's bad enough being that you have to be alert for the millions of reckless drivers out there, but to have one of these malfunction while you're in it.

it should be fairly obvious that self driving tech isn't ready yet

This is one futuristic idea that should be put down already.

You ever been in a plane?

Literally the exact same thing. The ability to switch it to auto is something that is inevitable.

Shocked by the reactions in here.

These autonomous cars have driven millions of miles and had such a small number of accidents.

Do people in here not fly? That’s basically auto pilot these days.

People hundreds of years ago probably thought the same way about trains. Why not just use horses b?

It's not the same. You don't have pedestrians or hundreds of other variables just surrounding you up in the air as you would down on the streets.

I’m ready for the self driving whips...just made a 10 hour drive the other day, that woulda been clutch

I’m def on board with the self driving and high speed train life , getting tired of driving ...All the new method of transportations being developed are all safer, faster and more efficient ...can’t wait ! :pimp:

Strawman. The same thing is the autopilot ability, flying a plane with 200+ passengers takes more skill than driving a car no? Yet 90% of the plane is automated. Self-driving cars does not mean you don't always have the option to control if you would like to. Which is inferred with the risk conversations......

Driving is one of the most mundane, tedious things we do in modern society. Good riddance.

The average IQ of a NT General poster must be below 60. Lol @ anyone saying lets stop advancing technologically

Self driving cars advance us more than flight did

Again, there's next to nothing that can impede an airplanes course when on autopilot. You think a self driving car will be able to anticipate everything on the road? Road closures, would it know when to go when a street lights is out, etc. Only in a perfect world would this technology be able to work.

Mundane? That just makes you sound lazy. Don't be crying when your self driving car steers you into a ditch or something worse.

a few jetliners literally broke up in midair at the dawn of modern passenger flight...they learned from their mistakes and made the necessary adjustments.

I'd bet on the same thing happening here. definitely unfortunate for her and her family tho.

While they both share similar characteristics, I think the word autopilot is misleading you. The plane ultimately is still always controlled by human.

"A mobile telephone? That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard."

That's gonna be some of yall in here in 20 years.

You guys should read up. The argument that humans drive more safely than the appropriate computer software is a losing one.

The purpose of the self driving car is too reduce the risk associated with transport by car (the ultimate risk with regards to routine, everyday activity btw).

All the indicators point to that being a near certainty, and we're still in the infancy stages of the technology.

I work closely with self driving cars for another company. I can't say much about what i do but i definitely hate that this happened.

In my opinion, once all the details are ironed out, self driving cars will make the roads infinitely safer than they are now. No drunk driving, no road rage, no hasty driving due to running late, no texting while driving etc

It may not be mastered until our kids are our age but it's gonna be one of those things that people look back on and think how dumb it was to go that long without it.

I am all for the advancement in technology and self driving cars. In 10 years this will be like having a GPS screen in your car now

Good point. A monstrous 50 ton Object Flying thousands of feet in the air sounds far more far fetched than self driving cars if you ask me. Even though planes crash, millions of people still place their faith in them year after year.

Looked at the first couple comments on the first page and it seems like dudes are blaming the car...

But I didnt read anything in OP that actually explains the situation. All you read is that she was struck at a crosswalk.

The fact that a human driver was behind the wheel to monitor the car as well seems suspicious to me... I'm hesitant to place blame entirely on the driver and the autonomous vehicle. That's 2 failed safety checks in an ambiougsly explained situation.

If she just jutted out into the street, especially at a green light cause dudes stay doing this downtown in my city...
