Sup NT, I just got an internship job at this bioinformatics company. Basically I'd be working with the marketing manager, she's pretty chill and toldme they have flexible work hours. Do y'all think I would be out of order if I asked to have half the day off on Mondays so I can continue playing in mycollege's intramural basketball league? Any people who have done internships for middle-sized companies? How flexible are they with you when it comes toother priorities in your life? Anyone have any excuses I could use to get half the day off on Mondays?

I wouldn't do it immediately. If the work load is pretty easy and you can do your job pretty quickly than yea I'd say go for it.
But right off the bat, I think you'd be sending the wrong message and especially how hard it is for people to get their foot into a company these days,I'd focus mainly on that internship.

If they have flexible work hours then just submit your requested schedule. There is a good chance that they wont ask "Oh and why do you want that?"At least from my own experiences..

I hope they allow me to submit some kind of requested schedule like s0leFUNK said. If not, I guess I'll wait a few weeks and then try to bring itup...thanks for the help NT.

I think you should wait it out and see how they feel about that sort of stuff. If you feel it won't jeopardize your internship then go ahead and ask.

half the day on monday... ~4 hrs right?

ifyou really want to make a good impression...offer to add on those 4 hours on the rest of your work days.

Wouldn't that be how it works anyway. I've known people (never done it myself) that had to work a certain number of hours in a week but they didn'tmind when you did them - as long as it was between 7am and 11pm or something.

Yea, I'd def be more than willing to do this.

Depends what their state laws are....if he has to work over 8 hours to "make up" the other time, couldn't it be constituted as "overtime"?

If you do request it, whatever you do, don't say it's for intramural bball.

This is your best bet. Unless she is super cool and just lets you take the half day every week.

Definitely don't ask during the first week. Feel the work load out and your boss. If it's a desk job in a company, in my experience you won't get a"requested hours" sheet. I don't clock in or out at mine, I just fill in the hours I worked at the end of the week on our intranet and submit itto my boss who approves it and sends it to Finance. "Flexible hours" doesn't always mean "Come and go when you need to, just get your workdone". It would usually mean "9 to 5 is standard, but if you go to lunch for an hour instead of 45 minutes no one cares". Does that make sense?

Dirty's suggestion is solid, and if your boss is cool, changes are she'll tell you not to worry about making up the hours as long as it doesn'tinterfere with your work. Whether or not you make 40hrs a week beyond that would be up to you. I can only say NOT TO ASK DURING THE FIRST WEEK. And don'tmake a big deal out of it, just make it casual and let your boss know that your priority is the internship.

Overtime is calculated as hours OVER 40 HOURS at the end of a work week. So if I worked 5am to 11pm tonight (19 hours), but then just five hours and 15 minutesfor Tuesday through Thursday (5.25 x 4 = 21), then I only get paid for 40 hours.

And don't NOT tell them what it's for, and especially don't lie. If they ask, tell them what it is. Chances are that they'll be impressed thatbeing involved with extracurriculars is important to your life. If you don't tell them, they'll assume you want more time at home to do nothing.

Lets see internship for a possible career or intramural basketball? I think you should check your priorities.

I think CA employment laws, depending on designation - ie exempt, non-exempt, vary...Our firm makes it very, very clear to staff not to exceed 8hours (chargeable) per day unless pre-authorized or it's Jan - April. And you better have a real good reason to go over 12, as well.
