Father of Mexican baseball player Oscar Robles reported kidnapped

MEXICO CITY - The father of Mexican baseball player Oscar Robles has been kidnapped in an armed attack, according to the attorney general's office for the state of Baja California.

A spokesman for the office said the incident took place on Wednesday as the victim, 52-year-old Oscar Manuel Robles Arangure, was leaving a baseball field in the border city of Tijuana where he was coaching a youth team. The office gave few other details, and it's not clear where the younger Robles was when the attack took place.

Kidnappings occur frequently in Mexico, but sports-related kidnappings are rare.

Oscar Robles, a third baseman who played for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2005 and 2006, and the San Diego Padres in 2007, plays for Mexico City's Diablos Rojos - Red Devils.

According to witnesses, at least six heavily armed and hooded assailants were responsible for the kidnapping. Witnesses reported the assailants travelling in two light trucks.

Baja California authorities declined to say if the kidnappers had made contact with the victim's family, or if there were ransom demands.

The last sports-related kidnapping in Mexico was in 2005 when Argentine football coach Ruben Omar Romano was held for 65 days before being freed by police.
