R.I.P.

Barry is a quitter, because he realized he didn't want to play anymore? It's not like he did it in the middle of the season, he retired in the OS, F outta here w/ that nonsense.

QUITTER....don't defend that crap. You don't like football then retire, don't wait till your tired of being on a bad team.

HBD Sweetness.

^What does any of the nonsense you're talking about have to do with his ability/effectiveness on the football field?

^ because all of those other greats didn't quit. You can not be considered the greatest at anything and quit in a sport.

the two are separate situations, Jordan had won three rings. his reasons can be for whatever he wants due to the combo of on court excellence and WINNING. Three rings in 10 years is a damn good career for anyone.

Barry admittedly quit because of the losing, therefore he quit on his team.

Jordan was one player on a team with 5 starters and 12 players total on the roster. Barry was one player on a team with 22 starters and 53 guys on the team. Get the @%++ outta here with that comparison.

Jordan and 4 scrubs could still scratch and claw and make the playoffs because it's a lot easier to will your team to a victory in basketball than it is as a RUNNING BACK in football. Put the football equivalent of Michael Jordan on a team with no offensive line, a bad quarterback and a bad defense and that player won't be able to do a damn thing about it. It's not like Barry could will them to victory every game and play hero ball like Jordan and Kobe did when their teams sucked; he runs for an 80 yard touchdown and then has to go sit on the sidelines while his defense gets gashed for another score; or his QB throws an awful pick, or his line gives him nowhere to run. COMPLETELY different situations. Since you're a Bears fan, you think Walter won a SB because he was just that good? Hell no, it was one of the best defenses ever and one of the best overall teams period. Barry never had anything close to that.

Yea we all wish he would have played a few more years but I can't hate on him for leaving while he was still healthy after a ten year career. Especially at a position which usually has a relatively short shelf life, I can understand why a guy would rather hang it up before his body breaks down on him than hang on for several more years and risk his post-career quality of life for a team that's not going anywhere.  Even with good players like Barry, Moore, Morton, and Perriman there the Lions won one playoff game while he was there and that was the only one in over a half century. Detroit had just drafted Charlie Batch to start over at QB and cut a crucial OL for salary cap reasons. Also it was well known that the Lions would not have accommodated a trade request. Can you blame him for feeling like he was in a hopeless situation? And have the Lions done a single thing since he retired that would have made them relevant while he was still there? Not even close. Would it have been worth it if he played three more years for 5-11 or 7-9 teams and got a debilitating injury?

Exactly plus football is an entirely diff situation. End of the day barry accolades/skills/talents superceeds paytons and it isnt even close. Ppl may say he didnt win, bs or +++ ever but football has far too many varibles for one player to have so much of a impact. Not to mention he coulda played more/longer, but what would have been the point? He already was the best, and there wasnt a snowball chance in hell the team/he would ever win anything at the next level. So why keep playing until you end up like most of the great players? Brain/body permanant damage. Dude coulda ended up on some veggie/cripple/****** status. Taking meds/pills/treatments till his dying days.

And as far as quitting/not having a undying love for the game, what does that have to do with your skill set talents exactly? You dont have to love something to be good at it. That doesnt even make sense. Passion/desire doesnt equal talent/skill/abilities. Thats like saying moss isnt great one of the goat wr cause his lack of passion/desire. End of the day barry talents/skills/abilities are far better then payton. Hell gale is somewhat close to it.

This is supposed to be an appreciation thread for the late, great Walter Payton. Not an argument over Barry Sanders. Can we just appreciate #34 please?

Barry is so overrated now that his career is over. He wasn't that good a blocker, had to be taken out at the goal line, wasn't that great a receiver out of the backfield either, and he had negative yardage in his only playoff game.  Not only that, Barry had more runs for negative yardage than any back in the history of the game.

He was a great back, one of the greatest ever, but not the GOAT because of those reasons.

You youngbucks watch some NFL network highlights and think he was the best ever but nobody who actually saw Barry play would call him the best ever.  It was always a debate whether he was better than Emmitt when both were in their primes.

Emmitt's separated shoulder game > any game in Barry's career.

You arent biased.

Barry Sanders was the GOAT runner but you have to do more than run well to be the GOAT RB.
