The Memphis Grizzlies are sending No. 2 overall pick Hasheem Thabeet to the D-League, the team announced on Thursday.

Thabeet is the highest draft pick ever sent to the D-League by an NBA team. A team can assign players to D-League duty only during their first two seasons as a pro.

Thabeet's assignment to the Dakota Wizards -- Memphis' North Dakota-based affiliate -- was first reported by the Web site RidiculousUpside.com, which covers the D-League extensively. Before the team's announcement, two sources close to the situation confirmed Thabeet's impending D-League stint to ESPN.com.

Although the Grizzlies acknowledged that Thabeet was a long-term project when they selected him with the No. 2 pick in June over the likes of local collegiate star Tyreke Evans, Memphis was hoping that the 7-foot-3 center could survive as a backup in his first NBA season. But Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins announced earlier this week that second-year center Hamed Haddadi of Iran would begin receiving Thabeet's minutes behind starting center Marc Gasol.

The Grizzlies, according to NBA front-office sources, offered Thabeet and second-year guard O.J. Mayo to the Golden State Warriors for Warriors guard Monta Ellis before the Feb. 18 trade deadline but were turned down.

Thabeet, 23, is averaging just 2.5 points and 2.9 rebounds in 10.3 minutes per game for the Grizzlies and supplants Portland's Martell Webster -- who played eight games for the now-defunct Fort Worth Flyers in the D-League in 2005-06 as the No. 6 overall pick in the draft -- as the highest draftee ever to play in the NBA's official minor league.

sorry if posted already.

No surprise. He was a project in college. He seems like he wants to be good, so we shall see what happens.

Why?  Going to bank about $8 mill over the next 2 years, at the least, and what was 1 more year going to for him?

Good. Im glad NBA finally has at least some sort of system for these players to use as "minor leagues" and help them develop. Go play 30 mins a game in the D League for awhile and keep tryin to get better.

Chris Anderson, Andre Blatche, Ramon Sessions, Marcin Gortat, Martell Webster, Aaron Brooks.

He is not a bust yet, he has specific measurable talents, the kid can block shots at an elite level, the problems that are limiting him from being a successful NBA player are all completely correctable.

His ceiling as a Dikembe Mutumbo type defensive force is still reachable.

I've got faith in this guy. Always seemed like a hard worker with a good head on his shoulders. Hope things pan out for him.

i dont follow college bball as much but how did this dude end up as a top 3 pick but dajuan blair gets drafted in the 2nd round? that matchup they had in college made it seem like they shouldve switched places.

doesnt seem like it would hurt his ego much. he needs playing time to develop. doesnt matter where you're drafted, playing is better than sitting on the bench.

and he can still play with the grizz. years ago farmar played d-league then for the lakers on the same day.

Doesn't seem like a bad idea. D-League minutes is better than no minutes. It'll definitely help with his confidence. I just don't understand why they won't play him though. The Grizz desperately need defense. So why would they choose Haddadi as their backup center over Thabeet? Thabeet actually blocks a fair amount of shots in the little PT he's given.

why would he? Who would you have drafted in that position that would have been a starter on this current team & they still keep up this current pace that they're at??

Atl had a desperate need for a PG, Memphis would be struggling if they had Reke at point right now & NO ONE was taking Steph with the #2 pick overall.

This dude dominated in college. Just couldn't translate that domination to the NBA.
Shoulda stayed in college
