Moving into a new dorm room and looking for a great 2.1 set up. After browsing this site and a few other audio forums a lot of people recommended klipsh promedias and the swan m10's.

None of these recommendations were recent and the swans are sold out/discontinued everywhere.

I will be connecting to a macbook pro with retina (possibly one of the new ones that may be announced in the next few weeks) so any info on soundcard pros/cons would help also.

Wasn't really trying to spend over 200 but i'm open to ALL suggestions as i'm trying to learn more of the audiophile world.

get some studio monitors. i use m-audio bx5's, krk rokit's are really popular too

How is the bass on those and overall sound quality? What's the difference between studio monitors, bookshelf, satellites etc?

Btw those krk are huge, probably too big for my desk

Agreed. Had some KRK Rokit 5's and sold them for some Mackie MR5MK2's. Although they're nice, I think they're not what you're looking for. You're probably looking for something to listen to rather than referencing. You're also gonna have to buy much more than the speakers first to listen to them. USB audio interface along with some TRS/XLR cables. Probably not worth it for you.

The Logitech Z-2300 are some of the best desktop/laptop speakers I've ever had but they're discontinued now for the other Logitech's mentioned in this thread.

You can find one here though for a decent price.

Edit: Oh and if you're trying to get into the audiophile world, be prepared to spend more than $200. The sound cards on these laptops are rubbish. You're going to need an amp or DAC.

That's what I have and no complaints here!

In regards to mp3's I usually download 320kbps. I've tried flac but I know i'm not getting the full sound from it.

Also those audioengine a2's have heard good things but they are real small.

And correct me if i'm wrong, logitech is on the lower end of brands?

Go to Best Buy and check them out, make the salesman play Pop That and make your decision based on the best sound

Yeah but they still make good products.

I don't think you're gonna need Rokits, they're pretty expensive. Since you're in a dorm, monitors take up a lot of space too.

The Promedias are real nice, I'd take those over the Logitech Z623s because they just sound real muddy to me.
