Look at guys like Jr Smith, Josh Smith, Tyrus Thomas, Jason Richardson, etc to name a few of many athletic freaks in the NBA. My question is how come theseguys don't put their athleticism to use when it come to defending superstars let say Kobe, Bron, Wade etc for example ? If they can jump out of the gym ordo windmills and all that crazy stuff. Why can't they use that quickness or explosiveness for their defense? If i can jump like J rich or VC i wouldactively try to block every shot possibles and would not allow my opponent to drive by me and lay it up, etc. The only guy that i can think of who actually usehis athleticism in defend is Dwight Howard. I think he average like 4 block a game but he's a center so that pretty much his duty on defense. The otherguys though, i don't know...

I think Ariza does pretty well and Iggy can defend also.

I was thinking the same thing, even if someone blows past them. They should be able to catch up and swipe the ball when they attempt to lay it up.

Because there are like four players in the league that really care about playing defense. Tyrus Thomas and them are not among those four.

It is possible to be a good athlete and try and not be a good defender.

Too many people seem to think it's all about effort, it's not.

Yeah, I'll go with a combination of the above answers:

    - it takes a lot of energy & effort
    - you'd foul out going for blocks and playing catch up defense
    - team D is more important
    - they haven't bothered to learn proper defensive techniques
    - it's a lot harder than you make it out to be

it's not even about being athletic. it's about knowing where you're supposed to be. and that's in your head, not your body.

and "superstars" are superstars for a reason. on certain nights, Kobe, Wade, Lebron, Dwight, etc simply cannot be defended, at least not by oneplayer. even playing against an athletic defender, these guys all have plenty of athleticism themselves and are savvy enough to know how to make plays in anysituation.

you acting like the superstars arent athletic. kobe, wade, lebron are just as atheltic if not more athletic then the guys you mention. a quick jab step or a pumpfake can get you off balance enough for the guy to just blow past you. no matter how athletic you is it dont take but 2 steps to get to the rim.

Josh Smith is a block machine. That doesn't entirely mean he is playing great defense because he usually comes from the blind side but he tries much harderon D than those others you mentioned. JR Smith, a player I think has unlimited potential, doesn't even look like he enjoys playing besides when he isdropping 25+ pts. Tyrus Thomas just has 0 basketball IQ. And JRich, well he flat out is not a good defender no matter how hard he tries.

Like someone above said, defense is more in the mind. Beating guys to the spot, contemplating which direction a player will shift, knowing players' shottendencies, etc.

When Nate gives 100% theres not a player in the league who can beat him off the dribble. He would be SUCH a great defender but people usually have a big timeheight advantage on him which makes it difficult to stop shooters.

    Bingo...

It's like the Tyson Chandler thing we got into a couple of weeks ago... Being tall and athletic does not make you a good shot blocker... [IMG]
