Lyrics actually matter more in other genres.

Hip hop is the only genre where 50% of people just listen for the beats.

It's not the ONLY genre where folks do this.

An ill section in a funk, jazz, soul cut will get heads OPEN.

They could be talkin' about chocolate chip cookies.

no. outside of rap people generally sit and listen to what the artist is saying. i'd say pop has the least focus on lyrics and hip hop even relies a lot on the beat and people just bob they head and pay no mind to the lyrics sometimes.

this is exactly what i was thinking da other time. i believe that in other geners lyrics matter but not as much as hip-hop.

Wrong.

Lyrics matter just as much if not more in other genres.

Wordplay, Delivery, Metaphors, etc? Pretty much Hip Hop

My bad I meant where it's more important. I know some whole rock albums are metaphors like Thom Yorke, Nine Inch Nails. They just don't use it to judge how great they are. Yes it helps their greatness but if Johnny Cash can paint a better picture storytelling than Lou Reed can with metaphors then no one really cares.

Agreed.

Hip-Hop has got to be the ONLY genre where (tons of) artists constantly talk about how great they are though. It's kind of pathetic.

they think thats being a lyricist... folks just dont have **** to talk about really... u can be lyrical with any subject matter

I'd say lyrics matter the LEAST in Hip Hop than in any other genre of music.

Word? So what genre do lyrics matter more... >D

Virtually all of them.

Do you want me to repeat the word Versace 6 times and pretend like this a new innovative sound I'm bringing to the game?

There are lots of great artists in Hip Hop. lets not act like they're THAT welcome nowadays.

People were mad that drake was on that Migos track, when everything else they ever made proves my point.

Pick a genre, any genre, and there was probably more thought put into the songwriting.

If anything ill say the most popular Hip Hop today is slightly more complex than Disney top 40 hits, and on the same level of thought as Country.

Look at how everyone hates Yeezus and MCHG, people clown Drake and Wale and J Cole for talking about real life. Aside from TDE and ASAP innovation is frowned upon at the mainstream level. Can't say anything too deep without people saying your Illuminati. Can't be vulnerable without people calling you soft. Etc.

Just my two cents. Hip hop wasn't always like this. Doesn't have to be like this. But lots of people in real life screw their face at Chance the Rapper or Joey Bad***** while bumping Chief Keef.

Of course they matter in other genres as well, but rap/hip-hop is where, historically at least, they are and should be heralded the most...
Wordplay = hiphop cornerstone
Exactly, and I actually think that when it comes to this question, "wordplay" is a more appropriate term rather than lyrics.

The art of storytelling is in the foundations of the genre.

It strays away from the roots when the concept of "dropping science" or "intelligent rhymes on the mic" gets replaced in favor of corny punch lines and repeating the same few words x6.

People here are letting Current lyrics cloud da fact

They are subconscious agreeing with da topic.

No other genre has lyrics so heavily scrutinized

Like hiphop.

So much truth in this post.

People do have a certain mindset nowadays especially when it comes to urban music.

Anything different is viewed as corny, trying to hard, or fans say they want the old version back.

You can't win with fans who are scared of progression or change and this happens the most in the urban community which most rap is guided towards.

How can you say that when all the artists he named that do "different" stuff are the top selling artists? You mogs live in your own world

Lyrics matter in other genres, but in other genres I notice people try to make them seem deeper than they are.

Look at the lyrics to a song of another genre, compared to a rap song.

If you have a little substance it gets magnified, because there's a lot more repetition in rock, jazz, R&B....

If you make a conscious song in rap, the WHOLE song needs to be conscious. In another genre people will pick a part a couple of lines.
