It depends on the phone.

Phones store emoticons in strings such as "" ":-(" ":/" and so forth locally. So while you may be able to store those emoticons on your phone, they won't show up on another person's.

I too wish for a day where ":"+"hat" will have visual significance on my cellular device.

You can download the Emoji keyboard, but only other people with iPhones will be able to see the characters
