Kind of a stupid question.

it is indeed correct grammar wise, but the problem is the pronunciation of "they're". In that scenario, such pronunciation just doesn't soundright.
 
how about "No they'ren't"...?

they ARE not

Correct. Take into account the sound of the sentence. If it doesn't sound right then use the two words.
