Laptop/Computer Question!!!!! NT Nerds Come On In

I got a new laptop right around Christmas

..... its a Sony Viao and i loved it. A few days ago the harddrive some how got fried

I got the "Operating system not found" screen/prompt, when and tried to reformat it and couldn't because Windows couldnt recognize a HDD to install itself on. Now I've called Sony and got it all covered by the warranty, so the problem should be resolved in a few days hopefully.... Ironically literally an hour before this whole debacle started I was on NT reading a PC vs Mac thread and someone was bashing on Sony's shotty parts

Now my question is, what in the world could have caused this to happen to my poor laptop? I hadn't downloaded anything, no porn or anything

have you checked to make sure the hdd is connected? Could be a loose cable.
Or you coulda just had bad luck and received a faulty drive.

Nah I didnt wanna open up the laptop cuz I'm pretty sure it would void the warranty...

Question: Is everything on my busted hdd gone?

could have bumped the drive while it was spinning = corrupted, maybe that took out the power as well? My problem is usually just forgetting to plug the HD in

I definitely am getting a ext HDD after this whole debacle

Damn man, that sucks. I bought myself a Sony Vaio back in February. I hope that doesn't happen to me.

For external HD's, I've heard Western Digital and I want to say Seagate. But for sure Western Digital is a really good brand.

I have a Vaio and this happened after I opened it up (to fix another problem... it was out of warranty). What happened was the system bus that connects all the vital parts of the computer came loose on its connection to the hard drive. So, its possible that somehow yours came loose.

^ya im actually really happy with how Sony dealt with this

... They directed my call to India and I told the dude what I thought was the issue, ran thru some of the standard bs tests, had me on hold (they have excellent hold music BTW, they were playing Justin Timberlake live at MSG), came to the conclusion that I was right and scheduled some computer wiz/tech to come out to my place and fix it on the spot

Question: Is there anyway I'll be able to recover my data from the HDD?
2nd Question: Could an ext HDD crash or %!@% up like a regular HDD?

1) yes-- you can slave it
2) yes-- especially the powered ones where an AC adapter is needed.

This could have very well been me. Sony has the crappiest parts and still manages to charge a premium price above their competitors. Amazing what brand image will do for you.

What happened was your motherboard probably fried. You'll have to get it replaced but luckily you have that warranty right?

^yup they're customer service was amazing. I was actually half expecting them to shoot me down and say it wasn't covered
