Laptop Suggestions

I'm looking for a new laptop, but I'm not sure what I should get.  It's main use will mainly be schoolwork and browsing around.  What kind of things should I be looking at?  Can you guys help me out?
 
A macbook pro sounds good, but I think that might be out of my price range. I guess $600-$850 might be good?
 
You don't need a Macbook. Just get something with a Core 2 Duo processor and that'll be enough for what you want to do
 
make sure it has plenty of RAM. I made the fail mistake of getting mine with only 1GB of RAM last year and it was unbearable. Had to add another 1GB just to make it run ok.
 
What's a good amount RAM to have? And what's the difference between 32bit and 64bit?
 
any casual user would be fine with 3GB of ram. 4GB and your running real smooth, especially if you dont use your labtop heavily.

and the difference between 32bit and 64bit is that 64bit machines are able to handle more RAM. making them much faster in general.

i believe 32bit machines are only able to use 4GB of ram? im not sure though.
 
Don't most laptops have aCore 2 duo processor in them?

So does it matter whether I get 32bit or 64bit if I only have 3GB of RAM?

Sorry for all the lack of knowledge on computers and thanks for all the help.

How much you looking to spend?
You need 4gb of ram, sooner or later applications such as the internet will use more ram memory than 1GB and other applications will have a requirements.

Also core duo is being phased out by Intel 4 way hyper-threading. 4 CORES.  Look for the i3, i5 and i7 if your demand performance.

i got an Asus k50 with dual core processor, 3gb ram, for $475 i dont do nothin but internet and music occasionally.

the only thing that i dont like about it is that it has "lap firing" speakers. which are speakers that are place at an angle below the laptop

this means that if u have the laptop on a desk, then the sound waves bounce off the table and are directed toward you...HOWEVER, if u have the LAPtop on your lap, then the sound waves are goin straight toward your crotch, givin your sound a muffled feeling.

also the touchpad has all these lil dimples, which is fine, but everynow and then it makes it feel kinda waxy cuz of the surface texture, im use to havin a smooth touchpad on my old laptop which was an OLD Dell.

but most laptops now come with textured touchpads

neither of these minor complaints are a deal breaker tho. i am satisfied very much with my purchase.

I was in a similar boat as you last month and I bought an Asus Eee PC for $400. Great choice if you really only want to use it for school work and browsing. However, if you want to download music, porn, etc. then you should probably look elsewhere.

I think you're misunderstanding...alot of companies use the same parts.  The problem with HP is overheating.  It doesn't overheat because of crappy parts, but probably because of poor chassis design.  I have used majority of the laptops you listed up there haven't had any problems.  Everyone says dell is crap, but I have a 10 year old dell laptop that can still run.  Asus is no better than any of the laptops you listed under the crap category.  Alot of people on NT are fooled by the chart that was posted on NT earlier.  Asus' build quality is horrible in terms of materials used.  It's just as cheap as dell, gateway, and acer.  Out of all the ones you listed sony probably has the best build quality when you get into their higher end series, but they cost a pretty penny.  Macbooks have great build quality, but the only thing is ventilation, they tend to get really hot if you sit it on your lap.  Also i3s are not quads, and only lynnfield i5s are quads which I believe are the 7xx.  Lower end i5s are not quad.  For OPs needs a core2duo would work and if he needed a bit more clock speed he can always push his CPU with OCing.
