Laptop to TV aspect ratio help?

I just recently got myself a vga cable to hook my laptop up to my tv and I cant get the aspect ratio right on my tv so that I can see the taskbar and everything on the tv.  Anyone know how to get it so I can use the entire tv as my monitor?

right click desktop>graphic properties and play with the display on your laptop

or

it could be the TV display so grab your controller and change the screen (zoom, full pixel, wide zoom, ect)
