"On Dec. 10, 1968, a uniformed man pulled over a bank car in Tokyo. He explained that police had received a warning that dynamite had been planted in the vehicle, which was transporting bonuses for local Toshiba employees. The four passengers got out and watched as the officer crawled underneath.

After a moment he rolled out, shouting that the car was about to explode. When the passengers ran, he got in and drove off.

Thus one man stole 294,307,500 yen in broad daylight, working alone and without harming anyone. It remains the largest single heist in Japanese history. The thief was never caught."

Lol I always find stories like this amazing and mind boggling. Playing the psychological card always gets you somewhere. Anyone else ever hear/run into this story?

Amazing.

okay, i went back and checked some figures - in 1968, the japanese yen was fixed at 360 per dollar. (it was fixed at this rate from 1949 til 1971)

so 294,307,500 yen = 817520.83333333333333333333333333 dollars in 1968.

and, at the time (up until 1969), the dollar was fixed at a rate of $35 to a troy ounce of gold, so 817520.83333333333333333333333333 dollars = 23357.738095238095238095238095238 troy ounces of gold

but today, the price of a troy ounce of gold is anywhere between $863.43 - $949.95, depending on the dealer you buy gold from.

so, if we take the 23357.74 ounces of gold (i rounded for brevity but kept the original figure in my calculator) and multiply it by the current price of gold..

it's anywhere from $20,167,771.80 to $22,188,683.30 in today's dollars.*

so umm.. i guess we could say it's about $21 million
