LOCK IT UP - College Football - 2009 Season/2010 Off-Season

RALEIGH, N.C. -- North Carolina athletic director *$@# Baddour said Thursday the NCAA is investigating a sports program at the school regarding possible rules violations.

A source at North Carolina told ESPN.com's Joe Schad on Thursday that UNC football players were interviewed by the NCAA this week and asked questions about agents and whether anyone had received gifts or extra benefits.

Defensive tackle Marvin Austin, one of several Tar Heels who passed on the NFL draft this spring, was among the players interviewed, according to the source.

The source said the NCAA's questions to players were intended to "make sure no Reggie Bush stuff is going on."

Baddour declined to tell The Associated Press which sport was being probed.

"I was told that I could limit my comments to the fact that they had been here and they wanted me to say that we had indeed been cooperative," said Baddour, adding that the inquiry "has our full attention."

The investigation began with a phone call from the NCAA, Baddour said, though he declined to say when the call came or when investigators had visited the Chapel Hill campus.

"We work hard on our compliance program, a program of integrity," Baddour said. "We're proud of it. We are also proud that, or we think very strongly that, we get an inquiry from the NCAA that we would comply, we would do what they asked us to do and we would do it forthright and completely."

A second source said that the NCAA asked all of UNC's projected NFL draft picks to provide phone records so investigators could see which agents they had spoken with.

The players were also asked who paid for the travel, who paid their rent and which agents they had met with and when, according to the second source.

Austin recently tweeted about a trip to Miami.

Both sources used the word "hectic" to describe the agent activity surrounding North Carolina football since multiple players passed on the NFL draft.

A third source, with ties to North Carolina, said that Austin was asked about having been seen driving Kentwan Balmer's vehicle.

Balmer is a former North Carolina defensive end who plays for the 49ers and worked out in Chapel Hill this offseason. Another source said Austin stayed at Balmer's apartment at times this offseason as well.

Davis is preparing for his fourth season in Chapel Hill and has guided the program to consecutive eight-win seasons, including the program's first back-to-back bowl seasons since the late 1990s, when Mack Brown left for Texas.

Davis has a 20-18 record with the Tar Heels, including 11-13 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. When Davis inherited the program from John Bunting, the Tar Heels had gone to just two bowl games in six seasons, during which they were a woeful 27-45.

The Tar Heels are expected to contend for the ACC's Coastal Division title with a defense that returns nine starters from a unit that ranked among the nation's best last year. North Carolina opens the season against LSU in Atlanta on Sept. 4.

UNC peoples are saying it's just Austin and Little and that they may be suspended or somehow penalized. I think it goes deeper than that but not much otherwise will be uncovered and any violations won't have a big impact on the program.

Wraith I'm still seeing the old avy.

As far as the NCAA investigating us I heard the news around 5:30 driving home from work. Then my internet didn't work at home so I'm just now getting a chance to read the articles/IC. Apparently it has to do with rent, travel, and jewlery? And Marvin, Quan, and Greg Little are allegedly the players that were questioned. There's a 27 page thread on IC, so hopefully someone will have an inside scoop.

I think its funny any kid from Byrnes HS would talk crap about other people recruiting tactics when Tennessee sent college girls to their games to get them to come to their hotel to bang them. Cmon Corey Miller, dont throw stones big boy.

I dont think Marvin Austin knowingly did anything wrong. I think its possible the NCAA questioned some of the things he has, and places he goes. He has quite a few friends that are now in the NFL, and hence, are millionaires.

I think its highly possible that agents runners that go to UNC, paid for stuff and these kids accepted it as a friend helping them out. If thats the case, id assume they can repay those funds and this will pass.

With most college coaches taking some well-deserved time off, things are slow when it comes to recruiting rumors.

That makes it a perfect time to take a look at some of the topuncommitted prospects in the country and share some inside info as towhere they could be leaning.

One team looks be emerging for James Wilder Jr.

While the top four prospects are uncommitted, Tampa Plant athlete James Wilder Jr. could be the closest to a decision and is the subject of many rumors.
A few things have become clear when it comes to Wilder Jr., a6-foot-2, 219-pounder who is the son of former NFL running back JamesWilder, a Missouri alum. First, Wilder Jr. will be a running back atthe next level. While there had been rumors of a potential switch tolinebacker, he has made it clearer than ever that he wants to carry theball and that schools looking at him as a linebacker can stop wastingtheir time.

Second, a team has emerged as a favorite for his signature.Early in the process, Wilder seemed to be favoring Florida State, Miamiand Georgia and was looking at Florida only if he decided to playlinebacker. But a lot has changed.

Sources say Florida now is the team to beat. Alabama, Georgia,Georgia Tech and possibly USC have a chance to supplant Florida, but itwill take something special. Miami and Florida State have fallen backand aren't really contenders right now. Wilder has been to Alabamatwice, so a return trip before his decision isn't expected. He will beat Georgia at the end of this week and will follow that with a visit toGeorgia Tech, but sources say it's more to confirm his choice ofFlorida than anything else. A visit to USC is possible for next week, but barring something strange, he's not expected to head that far awayto play football.

Why Florida? After all, the Gators haven't had a power running back since Urban Meyerarrived and many running backs have been scared away because of Meyer'sspread offense. But Florida has had a power running game; it's justthat it was a quarterback (Tim Tebow) and not a running back gettingthe carries.

Sources say Wilder Jr. is enthused that Florida looks to bemoving to a more traditional power running game and is recruitingfullbacks; Tampa Catholic's Hunter Joyer, the nation's No. 1 fullback, is a Florida commitment. Florida isexpected to still feature the dive play and many inside and off-tacklerunning plays, but instead of Tebow carrying the ball, Wilder would bethe guy. Throw in his comfort level at Florida as well as that of hisfamily, and the Gators will be tough to beat.

Things could change; there's Georgia's running back tradition andpro-style offense and the attraction of being the next "B back" atGeorgia Tech, a la Jonathan Dwyer. Alabama can't be discounted, either, although the Tide came on a bit later than others as far as Wilder's interest.

More five-star talk

There are six other five-star prospects who remain uncommitted, withAlabama in the mix for four of them. The biggest rumor this past weekis in regard to the nation's No. 1 player, Rock Hill (S.C.) SouthPointe defensive end Jadeveon Clowney.

JADEVEONCLOWNEY12_11200.JPG

spacer1.gif

Alabama is making a move for Jadeveon Clowney.

Clowneylong has been considered a strong South Carolina lean, and while theGamecocks are in the hunt, two other teams have emerged as seriousthreats - with Alabama leading the way.
A good source says Alabama has become the team to beat forClowney following a recent visit. In fact, sources from the Rock Hillarea say that all he talks about is the Tide, which is worrisome toSouth Carolina and North Carolina, the other school that has emerged asa true threat. While some of this could be post-visit enthusiasm,Alabama is here to stay in this battle. North Carolina is as well, selling to Clowney how he could become the next Robert Quinn, the big defensive end who is expected to be a high first-rounder in next year's NFL draft.

If Clowney were to decide today, it would be Alabama despite former teammates Stephon Gilmore and Devonte Holloman currently playing at South Carolina and the proximity to home.

Alabama also is about to enter the Tony Stewardsweepstakes. Steward, the nation's No. 2 player, is a linebacker fromSt. Augustine (Fla.) Pedro Menendez. He currently lists Clemson No. 1and Florida State No. 2, with Florida and Alabama just behind. But mostfeel he is the Seminoles' to lose.

Steward is scheduled to be at Alabama next week for camp, and you can bet a huge push will be made by the Tide.

Alabama also involved with two other five-star prospects - offensive tackle Cyrus Kouandjio of Hyattsville (Md.) DeMatha and linebacker Curtis Grant of Richmond (Va.) Hermitage.

The Tide has to be considered the leader for Kouandjio, whosebrother, Arie, signed with Alabama in February. Cyrus will be visitingAlabama early next week to visit his brother and check things out.Cyrus hopes to visit UCLA, California and USC this summer, but isn'tsure if he will be able to make that trip. He has been to New Mexico(twice), Penn State, Pitt, Maryland, Virginia Tech and Virginia thisspring and summer, and hopes to narrow his list to 15 schools by theend of July.

Grant has been to Alabama and sources say he came awayimpressed and that the Tide are high on his list. But most sources sayFlorida has emerged as the team to beat. Virginia Tech, Virginia, NorthCarolina, Clemson, Georgia and Georgia Tech are also in the mix, andGrant currently is visiting USC and UCLA. He hopes to see Michigan andOhio State in early August and cut his list, possibly to five forofficial visits, during August.

The two remaining uncommitted five-star prospects are Gardena (Calif.) Junipero Serra wide receiver George Farmer and Cibolo (Texas) Steele running back Malcolm Brown.Farmer is considered a near-lock for USC, with Oregon, Florida, Miamiand Alabama rounding out his top five. Brown is a huge Texas lean, followed by Florida State, Oklahoma and the Tide.

Alabama has little to no shot at either prospect, but it isimpressive that the Tide is involved with every uncommitted five-starplayer left on the board.

If Farmer and Brown end up at schools other than USC and Texas, respectively, it will be stunning.

More Plant decisions

Inaddition to Wilder's decision, two other highly recruited players fromTampa Plant will be making their decisions at the end of July or inearly August.

Does LSU lead for Phillip Ely?

Leaders have emerged for quarterback Phillip Ely and offensive tackle Tony Posada.
Posada is expected to commit to Michigan unless Florida comes inwith an offer, which could happen. Florida has offers out todouble-digit offensive linemen, but only lead for Dover (Del.) High's Trip Thurman, who also likes Boston College and South Carolina. Florida already has a commitment from Tommy Jordanof Ridgefield (Conn.) High and wants to sign three or four linemen inthis class, so it's possible the Gators could offer Posada. If theydon't, it likely will be Michigan for Posada.

As for Ely, his situation is harder to read. Ely's top offer isfrom LSU, and the quarterback situation with the Tigers likely is themost attractive. LSU wants two quarterbacks in this class, one a purepasser and one athlete; Ely would be the pure passer. In a perfectworld, LSU would land Ely and fellow Florida quarterback Jacoby Brissett of Palm Beach Gardens Dwyer, but there is serious competition for Brissett.

Suwanee (Ga.) North Gwinnett athlete C.J. Uzomahhas narrowed his list to Auburn and LSU, and sources say he prefersLSU. Thus, it will be interesting to see if the Tigers hold out forBrissett or push on Uzomah.

If Ely doesn't end up at LSU, keep an eye on Clemson, WakeForest and Ole Miss unless a school such as Florida, Notre Dame orAlabama offers.

Best guess right now is that Wilder ends up at Florida, Posada at Michigan and Ely at LSU.

SMU stunner

Four-star defensive end Davon Moreland'scommitment to SMU last week can be considered one of the biggestsurprises in recent recruiting memory, not just for this year but forthe past decade or so.

Moreland is from Los Angeles Salesian, and his commitments makes sensein that he has family in Texas and has been sold on the idea of earlyplaying time with the Mustangs. But Moreland is talented enough to getearly playing time in the Pac-10 or another power conference.

This move - and its timing - is interesting. Moreland had offers fromArizona, Arizona State, Oregon State, San Diego State, Texas A&M,UCLA, USC and Washington. Many thought UCLA was his leader, and you canbet Rick Neuheisel and others will not give up on this one.

Big names at 'Dawg Night'

The Georgia Bulldogs coaching staff is gearing up for Friday's "DawgNight," a one-night camp where numerous top prospects, both in-stateand out, are invited.

spacer1.gif

Bulldog target Isaiah Crowell will be in Athens on Friday.

Wilder will be there, and he will have plenty of company, especially from prospects who have Georgia higher on their list.
Perhaps the biggest target for Georgia who will attend is Columbus (Ga.) Carver running back Isaiah Crowell, the nation's No. 17 player. He has been to Georgia recently, but "DawgNight" holds a great deal of significance for Crowell and Carverdefensive tackle Gabriel Wright. At last year's "Dawg Night," Georgia coach Mark Richt invited Carver athlete Devin Burns to the event with the promise of an offer, only to send Burns and his family away disappointed.

Carver coach Dell McGee was outraged at what was deemed amiscommunication between Georgia and Burns (who signed with Maryland inthe end) and banned Bulldogs coaches from his school. But fences havebeen mended, and Georgia once again is welcome at Carver.

Georgia is considered the leader for Crowell, followed closelyby Alabama; Auburn leads for Wright, with the Bulldogs No. 2. Carveralso will be sending 2012 standouts Artimas Samuel and Deion Bonner to "Dawg Night." Both are strong Georgia leans. Georgia recently added USC transfer Jarvis Jones, a 2009 Rivals100 member from Carver.

Other big names expected include Wadesboro (N.C.) Anson linebacker Stephone Anthony (a Florida lean), Tarpon Springs (Fla.) High offensive tackle Zach Debell (heavy Georgia lean) and Folkston (Ga.) Charlton County athlete Chris Milton (no offer but would commit if he received one). Those on the fence about attending for different reasons include defensive end Xzavier Dickson from Griffin (Ga.) High, Atlanta Grady athlete Damian Swann, Valdosta (Ga.) High safety Malcolm Mitchell and Fort Pierce (Fla.) Central defensive end Giorgio Newberry.

While Newberry is wide open, Georgia will be battling hard with Alabamafor Dickson, Mitchell and Swann, so a good time at "Dawg Night" wouldhelp.

Seffner (Fla.) Armwood running back Matt Jones,a top 2012 prospect, will be on hand; he is a Georgia lean. Other 2012prospects with an early Georgia offer expected to attend includeHamilton (Ga.) Harris County defensive end Jordan Jenkins and Jacksonville Bolles brothers Nathan Theus (2011 long snapper) and John Theus (2012 tackle prospect).

It wouldn't be a stunner to see Debell and the Theus brothers pull the trigger if things go well.

Cal picking up steam

There is a lot of recruiting news at Cal these days and it's all goodfor the Golden Bears, who are looking to build on last year's stellarrecruiting class.

One rumor that continues to gain traction is that four-star running back Brendon Bigelowof Fresno (Calif.) Central East will end up in Berkeley even though heremains committed to Washington. A switch could be kept private just sonumerous schools don't hound Bigelow, a source said, and it couldhappen months before it becomes public. Bigelow would be a top-fivenational prospect had he not injured his knee last year.

There also is talk that four-star defensive end Jason Gibson of Gardena (Calif.) Junipero Serra continues to like Cal more than others; Oregon and UCLA also are in his top group.

As with the last recruiting cycle, Cal's recruiting reach is stretching across the country. A source says four-star safety Avery Wallsof McDonough (Ga.) Union Grove has been in close contact with Cal'scoaching staff in recent weeks, and Cal now is in the top group forMatthews (N.C.) Butler athlete Kris Frost. California signed North Carolina natives Keenan Allen, Gabe King and Chris McCain in February.

Four-star cornerback Charles Jackson of Klein (Texas) Collins has been reaching out to Cal defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast, and there is a rumor that recent USC commitment Kent Turenewants to take an official visit to Berkeley. Turene, a linebacker fromLauderdale Lakes (Fla.) Boyd Anderson, is a four-star recruit.

The battle for Louisville

The recruiting battle in the city of Louisville escalated to a new level Tuesday when Kentucky coachJoker Phillips hired former Louisville recruiting coordinator Greg Nord.

spacer1.gif

Joker Phillips sent a message with his recent hire.

Nord,a Kentucky grad and Louisville native, was on Louisville's staff for 15years and was in charge of recruiting the city of Louisville for quitea few years before he and the rest of the staff was dismissed withSteve Kragthorpe in December. Nord had been hired as Illinois' tightends coach in January and will be Kentucky's tight end coach andspecial teams coordinator.
Nord's hiring was a shot across the bow from Phillips to thenew Louisville staff. UK has had success landing some of the topplayers in Louisville in recent years, but that seemed to change inDecember. New Louisville coach Charlie Strong got a commitment from Louisville Pleasure Ridge Park defensive tackle Brandon Dunn, held onto a commitment from receiver Stephan Robinson from Louisville Central and nearly reversed UK's huge lead for linebacker Tim Patterson from Louisville Central.

Strong and Louisville are dominating the city in 2011, having already landed commitments from defensive tackle Jamon Brown, safety Jalen Harrington and running back Jerrell Moore from Louisville Fern Creek, quarterback DaMarcus Smith from Louisville Seneca and wide receiver DeVante Parker from Louisville Ballard.

At UK, Nord will be tasked with keeping commitments from two Louisville players - athlete Jon Davis from Louisville Eastern and defensive back Daylen Hall from Louisville St. Xavier.

Etc.

bullet.gif
Roanoke (Va.) Cave Spring safety Michael Coleis expected to decide within the next few weeks. Before a recent visitto Virginia Tech, most expected Penn State to win this battle, but nowit's too close to call. One would assume the Hokies would have the edgefor an in-state prospect, but Cole is really high on Penn State.

bullet.gif
Springfield (Ohio) High linebacker Trey DePriestis close to making a decision, and Alabama looks like his destination.DePriest has cancelled a trip to Florida for "Friday Night Lights" andnever made an expected trip to Ohio State. Alabama linebacker coach Sal Sunseri is recruited DePriest and has done an amazing job with the out-of-state prospect.

bullet.gif
Virginia Beach (Va.) Ocean Lakes quarterback/athlete Lafonte Thourogood is considered a strong Virginia Tech lean, especially with Hampton (Va.) High quarterback David Watfordcommitting to Virginia last week. But Thourogood wants to visitBlacksburg and West Virginia again before deciding. He is expected tomake his decision in August, if not sooner.

Athlete Quan Brayhas transferred to LaGrange (Ga.) Troup from Hogansville (Ga.)Callaway, and that could have an impact on his decision. Georgia now isback in the picture after trailing Alabama, Auburn and Clemson, amongothers, when he was at Callaway. The staff at Troup isGeorgia-friendly. Georgia is recruiting him as a slot receiver, whileClemson and Auburn are mentioning running back, the position he favors.Alabama wants him as a defensive back, but he prefers some offensiverole. Auburn is thought to be his leader.
bullet.gif
Austin (Texas) High wide receiver Cayleb Jones,a 2012 prospects, took recent visits to Miami and North Carolina, andwas blown away by the Hurricanes. One of the top prospects for hisclass in Texas, Jones does not have any connection to the TexasLonghorns, so he isn't a lock to stay home. Texas is among hisfavorites, but he lives in Austin mainly because his father, former NFLlinebacker Robert Jones, played for the Cowboys for many years. Jones'dad was coached by Miami head man Randy Shannon as well as North Carolina's Butch Davis, so a connection is in place at both schools. Jones is hoping to make an early decision.

bullet.gif
Etiwanda (Calif.) High offensive tackle Jamal Prateris close to committing to Oregon, and all that needs to be done now isfor him to visit Eugene. Prater, a three-star prospect, wanted tocommit to the Ducks in recent weeks, but coach Chip Kelly has a visit-first policy. Washington State also was in the running.

bullet.gif
Auburn, Alabama and Michigan are the final three for Orlando (Fla.) Dr. Phillips all-purpose back Demetrius Hart, with the Tigers and Wolverines as his top two and the Crimson Tidefading a little bit. In June, he was expected to commit to Michigan. But the longer this goes, the better it appears to be for Auburn.

bullet.gif
Arizona State, Michigan and San Jose State have offered Gardena (Calif.) Junipero Serra linebacker Woodson Greer, but sources say he's more interested in Arizona and UCLA. Neither theWildcats nor the Bruins have offered, but that means Greer might holdoff on making a decision until he sees what those two schools will do.

bullet.gif
Penn State and Ohio State are the favorites for Cleveland Glenville three-star inside linebacker Andre Sturdivant.Sources say Sturdivant definitely is interested in Penn State. The bigquestions are about academics and what position Sturdivant would playin college; some see him as a potential defensive tackle. Ohio Stateclearly has to be considered the team to beat, but will the Buckeyeshave room?

bullet.gif
Reserve (La.) East St. John cornerback Floyd Ravenloved his recent visit to Texas A&M, and the Aggies now could bethe team to beat over Ole Miss. If LSU offers, though, Raven likelygoes there. Speaking of LSU and cornerbacks, Carrollton (Texas)Hebron's David Jenkins could commit to LSU next week at camp.

bullet.gif
Dallas Smith tight end Chris Barnetthas Arkansas and Oklahoma high on his list, but the Sooners aren'treally recruiting him that hard. Barnett apparently is interested inMiami now after playing against a lot of south Florida prospects at theBadger Sports 7-on-7 who were talking up the 'Canes. He could take anofficial visit to Miami sometime during or after the season, and helikes the tight end tradition in Coral Gables.

Talk about it in The Main Board

It's looking like the investigation is centered around Greg Little and Marvin Austin accepting some sort of improper benefits. No one is really sure what the penalty will be. I can't see the program getting hit with sanctions, but I could be wrong., but I'm assuming our worst case scenario is that they will be suspended for the whole season though.

A couple dudes I trust VERY highly on VT boards that are pretty connected said there is a decent chance ***% is about to hit the fan for UNC.

Another said if what he was told is true (said he couldn't go into specifics other than to say it made the USC situation with Bush look tame) that they'd be facing multiple years probation.

Not saying anything will come to pass but from browsing the boards for years the people that posted this are trustworthy and usually only post when they have inside info about recruiting or coaching related stuff.

Rumors have been circulating recently regarding the favorite school of four-star quarterback Brett Hundley.
Oregon fans were certain the Chandler, Arizona, product would be a Duck. But that rumor faded when they received commitments from Jerrard Randall, Johnny Manziel and Marcus Mariota.

There was a rumor that he was a silent verbal to Washington. Again, not true.

Arizona fans thought he would be a Wildcat because his father played in Tucson.

Hundley has been relatively quiet with the media lately but he helped lay some of these rumors to rest Thursday when he told Scout.com that he has narrowed his list to two schools.

He tells us that those schools are Washington and UCLA.

"UW has a good up-and-rising program and is a good school," he says. "UCLA is a very top-notch school with another up-and-coming football team."

Hundley is a dual-threat player, not just an athlete playing quarterback. He has plenty of arm strength to make all of the throws, has a quick release and, if the pocket breaks down, can be a serious weapon on the ground.

Hundley (6-4 215) was named 1st-team All-Arizona and the state's Gatorade Player of the Year in 2009. He threw for 1,517 yards and 16 touchdowns versus just 2 interceptions. On the ground he rushed for 1,208 yards and 12 more touchdowns

Johnny Manziel isn't a QB at the next level. He's probably a WR. That kid can make some moves with the ball in his hand.

VT people are upset because Butch is going into VA and taking kids they used to get without a doubt.

I doubt hes connected with UNC or the NCAA like that.

This all came about because Marvin felt the need Tweet all the stuff he has, and the trips he takes to Miami with Vernon Davis and his other NFL players.

Did your VT buddy have any insight about Mike Vick's car while at VT?

That alone doesn't trigger a visit from the NCAA. If +%+% like that causes visits from the NCAA they might as well open up an office at every school since they'll be continuously questioning college athletes. The extent of which the NCAA conducted the questioning of players from UNC isn't a good sign. The fact that they came on campus while the coaches were away isn't a coincidence and it's probably the biggest sign that the issues they're investigating may be pretty serious.

Supposedly there's another investigation going on as well, but idk the school.

Zach DeBell to UGA. Nathan Theus (Long snapper) to UGA as well. The Theus pickup is HUGE as his brother John is probably the best OL in Florida for 2012 and for all intents and purposes, they are a "Package deal"

%*#!.
