The World Series champs rewarded Wakefield on Friday, picking up his $4 million option for the 2008 season. Next year will be his 14th in Boston, extending the longest tenure of any current Red Sox player.

Also on Friday, general manager Theo Epstein announced that the Sox had picked up the 2008 option on right-hander Julian Tavarez; plus, catcher Kevin Cash elected for free agency after declining an outright assignment to Triple-A Pawtucket.

In addition, Epstein named the player acquired by Boston in the July 31 trade of Joel Pineiro to St. Louis. Outfielder Sean Danielson, 25, combined to hit .296 with four home runs, 36 RBIs and 19 stolen bases in 103 games between Class A Palm Beach and Double-A Springfield in the Cardinals organization. Danielson drew 39 walks against 46 strikeouts, finishing the season with a .371 on-base percentage.

Daryle Ward, who ranks second in the Major Leagues with 33 pinch-hits over the last two seasons, will be back with the Cubs in 2008 after both sides exercised a mutual option on Saturday.

In other moves, the Cubs announced they had declined club options on outfielder Cliff Floyd and pitcher Steve Trachsel, both of whom filed for free agency last week. The team also added right-hander Adam Harben to the 40-man roster

Nats Make Contact With Hunter, Rowander on a one-year deal.

I admit that this approach should engage Nationals fans this offseason, even if they don't make a big signing. Is this really the right time to make a four or five-year commitment to a center fielder? It seems better to wait until more young talent develops and then make a strike.

Cubs Rumors: Wood, Schilling with Kerry Wood, who would garner plenty of interest on the open market. Despite rumors that Wood might look elsewhere for a chance to start, he's likely to stay with the Cubs as a starter.

The Cubs are on Curt Schilling's list, and they'll be in the mix for him if his price is reasonable. I take that to mean not much more than $12-13MM. A cheaper option might be Hiroki Kuroda, though that could take a three-year commitment. So, perhaps a larger cash outlay.

The Cubs will probably pass on Alex Rodriguez, though he would've been a nice fit at shortstop in my opinion.

Options: the Cubs exercised Daryle Ward's for $1.2MM. They passed on Steve Trachsel's $4.75MM option, which is a relief since there had been rumors of exercising it. Cliff Floyd is probably gone as well.

Astros Hope To Sign Luis Castillo

According to Ken Rosenthal, the Astros are looking to inject some OBP into their leadoff spot by signing second baseman Luis Castillo. He adds that not many teams are looking to fill second base via free agency, so the Mets might be the only team battling for Castillo.

Rosenthal rates Kaz Matsui and David Eckstein as the best second base alternatives behind Castillo. The Rockies are prepared to offer a two-year deal to Matsui but will move on if he wants too much. They can't be thinking about offering more than $8MM, wouldn't you say? Rosenthal says Matsui is not on the Mets' radar because, well, they already gave him a shot.

As for Eckstein - his best bet financially may be to market himself as a shortstop. His estimated take is $6-7MM over two or three years, a figure that would be deemed pricey for second base.

Quote:
Padres Rumors: Crisp, Pie, Andruw, Ecksteiners will be acquired even after Greg Maddux is retained. Rehabbing former Mark Prior and Matt Clement would both like to play in San Diego. There has to be some sort of cosmic rule about having three ex-Cubs in the rotation. That is not recommended. Plus the Padres were on Curt Schilling's list. And don't forget the team's previous trade interest in Josh Towers, who seems likely to be non-tendered and could be solid in PETCO.
* The Padres could pursue David Eckstein as a second baseman and leadoff man. But that would seemingly block Matt Antonelli for longer than necessary. Plus such a switch wouldn't be in Eckstein's best interests financially.
* Towers likes Jason Kendall, perhaps as a backup, but faces opposition in the organization.
* In another article, Towers lends credence to the theory that the Marlins could sign Alex Rodriguez.

--As you know, the Rangers have had difficulty finding a long-term center fielder. That's the main focus of this offseason. The team has already shown interest in Torii Hunter and Aaron Rowand, the top center fielders available. Other free agents such as Andruw Jones and Mike Cameron appear to be in play as well. Grant's trade candidates: Coco Crisp, David DeJesus, Mark Kotsay, and Carlos Beltran. We've speculated on DeJesus to Atlanta in the past. With DeJesus signed cheaply through 2011 and the market at the position robust this winter, it might make sense for Dayton Moore to wait a year to shop him aggressively.
--Grant adds that Jon Daniels is considering some affordable options for first base. They've already talked to Mike Lamb's agent and like Kevin Millar as well. Lamb came up through the Rangers' system but was traded to the Yankees in '04. Millar is under contract for '08 but it's in the $3-4MM range and the Orioles should be open to a trade. Grant says Ben Broussard could pique the Rangers' interest if he's non-tendered.
--Grant concludes with five Rangers whose names will be bandied about in trade talks: Gerald Laird, Vicente Padilla, Joaquin Arias, Jarrod Saltalamacchia, and Nelson Cruz. Salty's not being shopped but Grant expects teams to ask. He proposes some kind of bad contract swap for Padilla - Jason Giambi, Richie Sexson, or Adam Eatoned this year.

Baker keeping tabs on Cubs' Prior, Wood
Both could be free agents, and Reds need pitching

October 26, 2007
BY CHRIS DE LUCA cdeluca@suntimes.com
BOSTON -- Whether it's simply to catch up on the past or plot for the future, new Cincinnati Reds manager Dusty Baker has been chatting with his former Cubs co-aces, Mark Prior and Kerry Wood.

''I talked to Mark Prior [Wednesday], and I've heard from Woody and some other guys,'' said Baker, who will turn his focus to managing the Reds once his current gig as an ESPN analyst ends after the World Series.

Both pitchers could become free agents this offseason, and the Reds are starved for pitching.

Wood, 30, is eligible for free agency after completing a one-year, $1.75 million deal with the Cubs this season. He came off the disabled list Aug. 3 and went 1-1 with a 3.33 ERA in 22 outings as a middle reliever. If the right-hander wants to return to a starting role, he likely would have to do that elsewhere.

Prior, who missed the entire 2007 season after undergoing shoulder surgery, is eligible for salary arbitration. Prior, 27, made $3.575 million this season and couldn't be paid less than $2.86 million next season because major-league rules forbid cutting a controlled player's salary more than 20 percent.

Because he hasn't pitched in more than nine major-league games in a season since 2005, it's likely the Cubs will non-tender Prior, making him a free agent.

Baker seems to have taken a deep interest in the former first-round pick's situation.

''The thing I'm most curious about is I haven't heard what was wrong with Mark,'' Baker said. ''Usually, you hear torn labrum or rotator cuff. I would like to know at least where and what was wrong.

''If I'm going to get blamed for it, I would like to know exactly what happened. Most of the time when you have surgery, don't you have surgery on something?''

No one blamed Baker for Prior's shoulder problems that popped up this spring training. The day after Prior underwent arthroscopic surgery April 24, the Cubs released a statement saying orthopedic specialist James Andrews ''performed a debridement of Mark's right rotator cuff as well as repair of labral and capsular injuries in his right shoulder.''

According to Cubs sources, Prior underwent surgery to correct multiple issues in his shoulder. The club did not provide further details on the work done, sources say, because Prior preferred to keep the information private -- a request major-league clubs must honor.

Sources speculate that Prior could be off a major-league mound until June as he recovers from the surgery.

Baker was reminded that the Cubs were more secretive during his watch in 2004, when the team insisted Prior's inactivity that spring was related to ''right Achilles tendinitis'' -- the ailment still listed in the Cubs' media guide for the pitcher's two-month stint on the disabled list -- instead of elbow trouble that eventually was reported by the Sun-Times.

''I know what it was,'' Baker said. ''I'm not going to say.''

As he did upon his arrival in Chicago, Baker is portraying himself in Cincinnati as a recruiter of talent. It never really happened with the Cubs -- unless you count the Neifi Perez signing in August 2004 -- but he promises to be more vocal about the hand he is dealt in Cincinnati.

''I'm hoping that if we do lose some players,'' he said, ''that I can be more assertive about reloading vs. just accepting what you're given.''

That could be perceived as a complaint about the talent he was given with the Cubs. Did Baker stay mum on what he wanted in Chicago?

''I've always done that, everywhere I've been,'' he said. ''You've never heard me say, 'I need this, I need that.' I've always accepted what I was given. I figured I could make it work no matter what it is.''

So has Baker gone back to the mind-set of a manager, or is he still a media member?

''I'm not back in the [managerial] mind-set yet. I've got to finish this job first,'' he said of his work for ESPN. ''I'm semi in the mind-set. I've made contact with people. I've gone over rosters.''

Schilling, Red Sox Close To Deal

According to Rob Bradford of the Boston Herald, Curt Schilling and the Red Sox are close to an incentive-laden one-year contract. When reached for comment, Schilling said "something could potentially get done."

Bradford adds that the Astros, Diamondbacks, and Phillies have all contacted Schilling so far. That's surprising, because Schilling said today that the Phils hadn't contacted him. Or at least, Pat Gillick and Ruben Amaro Jr. hadn't.

The Red Sox would be looking at a 2008 rotation of Josh Beckett, Daisuke Matsuzaka, Curt Schilling, Clay Buchholz, and Jon Lester. Given the two kids and the 41 year-old, Tim Wakefield will get plenty of work. This is a very deep rotation.

Royals Interested In Guillen, Jenkins, Hunter

I was waiting for someone to name a few players of interest to the Royals, and Bob Dutton came through tonight with some names.

Specifically, the team is after a run-producer, ideally a right-handed hitter. That puts Jose Guillen atop their list. Dayton Moore might need to go a little north of three years, $30MM to get him.

Failing that, the left-handed hitting Geoff Jenkins is on the radar. He'd probably go for a one-year, $6-7MM contract in my estimation.

Dutton notes that the Royals have interest in Torii Hunter, but he's likely to be priced out of their range.

Dutton also hints that Sammy Sosa could be a consideration for the Royals, as he does have pop if nothing else. They are one of a handful of teams with an open DH spot.

the latest.
Top free agents and their predicted team for 2008
Quote:
1. Alex Rodriguez - Angels. Keith Law recently termed the Angels a "ridiculously good fit" for A-Rod. It's true. Despite what Arte Moreno says, the Angels can afford him, don't hate Scott Boras, have a third base vacancy, are expected to win in 2008, and have a low-pressure fan-base.

2. Jorge Posada - Yankees
. Which team is more likely to throw an unreasonable amount of money at Posada, the Yankees or Mets? The Yankees are more desperate to save face. Plus, as Buster Olney recently noted, they can move him to DH in a few years and the contract might not look terrible.

3. Mike Lowell - Red Sox
. They'll come in around four years and $48MM. Such a deal might be colored slightly by emotion but shouldn't be too damaging. If some team is crazy enough to pony up five guaranteed years, all bets are off.

4. Torii Hunter - Rangers.
The White Sox present serious competition, but the Rangers seem dead-set on Hunter. And of course, he has a home near the Ballpark in Arlington.

5. Andy Pettitte - Yankees. A rare case where a player exercises a reasonably priced player option. Pettitte is a different breed of ballplayer.

6. Mariano Rivera - Yankees. Mo has postured about the Yankees being just one of 30 teams. In the end, he'll retire a Yankee.

7. Barry Bonds - Padres
. I tried hard to make Barry fit on an AL team, and couldn't do it. He's not going to finish his career as DH for the Royals. While the Padres have a decent left field platoon in Scott Hairston and Jason Lane, this would be a Kevin Towers type of move if Bonds would sign for $12MM.

8. Aaron Rowand - White Sox. They'll flirt with Hunter but get Rowand. You could make a case that this contract will be no worse than Hunter's, given the age and slight salary difference. Bringing Rowand back would be a fan-pleasing move.

9. Carlos Silva - Metser one way or another, and Silva might fit. I was originally going to put Livan Hernandez in Queens. But if you're the Mets, why not tack on another year and $11MM to get the superior, younger guy?

10. Andruw Jones - Dodgers. This is a questionable match given Ned Colletti's feelings about Scott Boras. And Juan Pierre in left field, ugh. But I could still see this happening for, say, four years and $64MM. Colletti has been willing to overpay a bit to keep the term shorter.

Heyman's Latest: A-Rod, Atkins, Gagne

SI.com's Jon Heyman has a new column up. Let's discuss.

* Alex Rodriguez's five possible destinations: Angels, Red Sox, Mets, Giants, Dodgers. That sounds about right. Heyman notes that the Dodgers do not have an advantage because of Joe Torre; he says star players don't consider managers as a criteria when deciding where to sign.
* Though not mentioned as one of A-Rod's five potential landing spots, Heyman says the buzz is growing that Mike Ilitch and the Tigers could go after him.
* Heyman says the Rockies will hang on to Garrett Atkins and follow through with the plan to try Ian Stewart at second base. That could mean the end of Kaz Matsui in Colorado.
* How about Eric Gagne to the Tigers? If they are interested, that bodes well for me getting at least 1 of 50 right.
* Johnny Damon for Joe Crede first mentioned in the Chicago Tribune??!! That trade speculation, sir, is MLBTR's baby. Anyway, Heyman's source thinks the Yankees could do better for Damon.

Marlins Shopping Miguel Cabrera

This is a promising hot stove season with tons of angles to entertain us. Miguel Cabrera shouldn't get lost in the shuffle - this is a bona fide 24 year-old superstar, and he's available via trade.

Joe Capozzi of the Palm Beach Post lists the reasons - Cabrera is entering eight-figure salary territory, and he's been getting lazy. Capozzi's teams source says the idea of the Marlins signing Alex Rodriguez has no substance. But they would certainly trade Cabrera if they received a sweet package as they did for Josh Beckett. Translation: Phil Hughes or Clay Buchholz. Joel Sherman's source says this won't be an auction - the Marlins will target players and teams and make their demands. You have to imagine Hughes and Buchholz are on that short list. Michael Silverman expects the Red Sox to inquire on Cabrera, among others.

Capozzi also indicates that Dontrelle Willis is likely to stay put.

Quote:
Orioles Will Listen On Bedard

New Orioles president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail confirms what we've been reading for the past few months: the club will at least listen to offers for ace Erik Bedard. He adds that the O's have had preliminary, general extension talks with Bedard. I imagine that if Bedard is looking for the $18-20MM per year he could get on the open market, the O's will choose to trade him. Two years of Bedard is at least as good as one of Johan Santana, and Bedard doesn't have any no-trade stipulations. He made just $3.4MM this year.

What are your thoughts on a reasonable package the O's might get for Bedard? The typical Matt Kemp/Clayton Kershaw speculation seems to fit here.

MacPhail also admits that he'd prefer to have flexibility rather than all the long-term contracts the team has committed to. He expects an active trade market, and you can bet the Orioles will be in the middle. Miguel Tejada is likely to be dealt, especially if his name is absent from the Mitchell Report.

Quote:
Rays' Kazmir May Be Availableing with Phil Hughes, but the Mets don't seem to have the goods. It would take a pitcher of that nature - Hughes, Yovani Gallardo, Clay Buchholz. Otherwise, why would the Rays consider it?

Sherman also echoes the surprising notion that Tim Lincecum could be had for the right bat. He speculates that the Giants could pursue Carl Crawford or Delmon Young as the return. Hey, our Delmon speculation is catching on!

Sherman indicates that the Twins may be compelled to hold onto Santana, afraid of fan backlash if they also lose Torii Hunter. Meanwhile, another Santana, Ervin, might be had for a bat if the Angels can't sign Alex Rodriguez. Sherman's sources say any club in the A-Rod sweepstakes will move slowly in the market because his contract would dictate the team's available budget.

Also notable from Sherman's rumor-packed column: teams may wait for the Mitchell Report to come out before engaging in serious talks for Miguel Tejada. I've read speculation that MLB could release this report soon as a way of limiting free agent spending. Also, isn't it about time for Jose Canseco's next book, which supposedly has "other stuff" on Alex Rodriguez?

San Diego Greg Madduxer appeared inevitable after he went 14-11 with a 4.14 ERA this year in his first season with the Padres, who fell one win short of their third straight playoff appearance. All that remained to be done was some dickering between the team and agent Scott Boras.

Maddux had a player option for $8.75 million. Had he pitched 200 innings he finished with 198 the option price would have increased to $10 million. In addition, San Diego had a club option for $11 million.

The pitcher made $10 million last season.
