Precrime been real playa.

What McDaniel didn’t know was that he had been placed on the city’s “heat list” — an index of the roughly 400 people in the city of Chicago supposedly most likely to be involved in violent crime. Inspired by a Yale sociologist’s studies and compiled using an algorithm created by an engineer at the Illinois Institute of Technology, the heat list is just one example of the experiments the CPD is conducting as it attempts to push policing into the 21st century.

Cliffs:
- McDaniel's friend gets shot

- Because he has been identified as an acquaintance, McDaniel is added to a "heat list"

- Using "analytics", Chicago Police determine McDaniel is likely to retaliate

- Chicago Police send a commander to check on McDaniel and warn him that he is under watch, despite having no evidence or reason to suspect he is planning to commit a crime.

umm... you just stated the reason in the sentence before...

the police did not arrest him... just going up to talk to him equates to a violation?

thats like the police getting a report that your neighbor may have keyed your wife's car... so they go to talk to you to make sure the situation doesn't escalate....

Watched this last week and wow was shocked. Def don't blame his wife for leaving, what a nut.

Thoughts my ***.

... Well, placing someone in a database and putting them under surveillance due to the likelihood that they commit a crime is a lot different than having the police come talk to you about a situatuon that you're directly involved in (someone keying your wife's car.) Those aren't comparable situations at all.

The guy doesn't have a violent record (its unclear if he has a record at all.) Why would it be appropriate for the police to follow him around? Stop trying to justify harassment.

lol.... follow him around?

they sent an investigator to try to get info from him.. and told him he was being watched...

with over 400 people on the "heat list" do you really think they are actively following these people?

the manpower needed is out of their capability... the visit was a precautionary tactic...

the way the article is worded will make you feel a certain way..but applying the details to reality, you will see how this is the same as being put on a suspect list because your wife got killed and they don't have any leads.

Yes. They definitely do. Chicago has one of the most expansive police departments in the nation and have been known to use the city's camera infrastructure, drones, stingrays, and other technology to track people. They didn't send a commander to get information from him... He wasn't even involved in the situation, what info could he give?

Again, another situation that is not comparable AT ALL. The first person you rule out in cases like those is the spouse. This is a completely different scenario. Please stop trying to justify police harassment.

1. The entire system you are criticizing is based on the assumption that the victim's friends ARE involved...thus they would have useful info....

2. The analogy of the wife rings true because the system places the victim's friends in the same circle of suspicion as a husband in the situation.

3. Tracking suspects is not illegal under certain circumstances... I don't believe they have drone and camera operators watching these 400+ heat list suspects... they don't have the manpower for that... we are talking about 400+ people on active surveillance in just ONE of the surveillance lists they have....

4. The police don't show up to tell you that you are being watched unless they want info.... lol... you think they are just giving him a heads up?

smh

you don't read alot huh

First 10 seconds in the video it says he was accused and eventually led to a trial in which he was convicted (although overturned) for discussing and planning on killing and eating his wife and others even though he had never actually went through with it.

The plot is similar to Minority Report in which people are arrested for crimes in which they had not even occurred yet.

Are you a potato?

He was referring to the concept of 'thought crime' originating from the novel 1984.
