It can either be a class (gym, dance) or a sports team.

I am thinking about proposing an idea to my school and just wanted folk's opinion on why it shouldn't be a mandated thing,

I thought P.E. was already mandatory in school? Has it become an elective in certain school districts?

i wish we boxed during gym class, and the unsanctioned and self-regulated slap boxing doesn't count

Not in my school. Students "electives" are; Reading Intervention, Gym, Art, Dance, Music, Cosmetology. They take one per semester and one of those isn't required to be gym.

I'm on your side. I don't know why it shouldn't be mandated.

I like the idea, but be ready for the SJWs to come out in full force.

    Wow, I didn't know that.

I remember in back in HS, P.E. was mandatory the first two years and the last two years, you had the option to take them as an elective.

I think that would be good to have P.E. mandatory...You don't see kids playing outside on the streets. I miss playing football or baseball on the streets.

It COULD be different in other places though, so don't take what I am saying as the truth.

But I am more inclined to say ALL kids should have to play at least ONE sport. Or at least try out. Kids need more struggle. They need to know what it is like to be on a team and get punched in the mouth if they let someone down.

What grade level is this?In High School I had P.E every single semester and Junior High we had P.E once a week, both mandatory.

    I think it's a good proposal

Dang, get punched in the mouth?[IMG]

What if the kid's catching ability is maxed out at 60?

No. Don't bother wasting your time, it will get shot down.

We live in a very technological era. Why waste a kid's time with team handball when he/she could be coding in the lab?

How many people working in the tech industry benefited from enforced physical activity when they were young? Let these kids flourish.

You are speaking on a small number of kids man. Come on now.

It still can benefit those kids as well though.

Meh, I never worked out or did any activities in HS. I was also overweight, definitely not nice. Now I weigh nothing and am in great shape.

I don't think it should be forced, if someone wants to do it, they will eventually. Like I did

I just think it's a futile effort.  A few periods of gym class every week isn't gonna whip anyone into shape, nor is it really going to spark an interest or appreciation for exercise.

Fat kids gon fat, b. Making the decision to lose weight/get in shape is something the majority of people have to do on their own.

I'd be more in favor of a mandatory class on basic life skills (understanding taxes, understanding different types of insurance, understanding student loans, etc.).

While I agree this is a good idea, if the majority of kids struggle with basic high school level math, personal finance and taxation will easily overload them.

For younger kids I like the idea, for older kids not so much.

I had PE classes every year from middle to high school. It was fun, but could have done without the shorts!

We even had to take a swim test in order to graduate high school.
