Celts sign Marbury in time to play Friday

he Boston Celtics signed Stephon Marbury Friday after the guard cleared waivers, and the club hoped to have theNew York Knicks castoff in uniform for Friday night's game against the Indiana Pacers.

"We are very excited to have a player of Stephon's caliber joining our team," Celtics general manager Danny Ainge said in a statment."Our entire organization is confident in the belief that Stephon can play an important role in helping us to win another championship."

Marbury, a former All-Star guard who alienated Knicks management, teammates and fans, was signed after having his physical at the Celtics' suburbanpractice facility early Friday.

He agreed to a buyout of his $20.8 million contract and was waived by New York on Tuesday. The Celtics were expected to sign him for a pro-rated share ofthe veteran's $1.3 million minimum.

Marbury, who turned 32 last week, hasn't played a regular-season game in more than a year.

"I believe all systems are go and we will have Stephon on the roster later today," Celtics owner Wyc Grousbeck said in an e-mail to The AssociatedPress about an hour after Marbury cleared waivers.

Marbury could be seen from the public area of the workout facility wearing a white, long-sleeved T-shirt and sweatpants, jumping up and down as he took thepractice court, smiling and chest-bumping with several people wearing Celtics gear. After a few minutes, the automatic shades were lowered.

Marbury is expected to back up Rajon Rondo at point guard, a role Sam Cassell served when the Celtics won their 17th NBA title last season. Eddie House, who is more of a shooter, has been forced into the role this year; Cassell didnot play in a game for Boston this year before he was traded to the Sacramento Kings andreleased last week.

Marbury took a long leave of absence from the Knicks when his father died in December 2007, then had season-ending ankle surgery and has not played sinceJan. 11, 2008.

He returned to the Knicks in training camp, but when the sides tried to negotiate a buyout early in the season, Marbury at first refused to surrender anymore than $1 million of his $20.8 million salary and the team told him to stay home until a buyout could be completed.

Even before the final breakdown, Marbury was at the center of controversy during his five years in New York, from feuding with coaches to skippinggames.

With an ego as big as Marbury, can he put that aside for the well-being of the TEAM? I dunno...he's f'd up team chemistry in the past, and I just amnot convinced that he can swallow his pride...dude STILL thinks he's an all-star...and for all purposes, I bet he thinks he's better than Rondo....thatbeing said, this may be his last chance in the L, so he might be on his best behavior....who knows....it's gonna be an interesting situation to watch.

I have a feeling he'll be this season's Damon Stoudamire/Jalen Rose. He'll just end up riding the bench for the most part.

Good move for the Celtics and Marbury. It's the second half of the season so I doubt he can really mess up their chemistry in about 3 months. Marbury wantsto prove something and hopefully he will. Their second unit definitely got better because of this.

what a career....cry your way out of Minnesota because you are jealous of Garnett, get dumped by three more teams, now latch on to elder Garnett to gain ring.

I'd say he's come full circle.

I'm expecting a lot of flaming from fellow laker fans, but im honestly kind of excited to see him play for the celtics. I'm just curious to see how itall plays out and if he can still be productive at this point in his career.

As much as I like the Celtics, I'd definitely take these guys over them...

And I think this Marbury signing won't work out.

In the last 10 I think there are a few teams that were better than the Celtics.

In the last 10 years, that would count Jordan's last year with the Bulls. It also includes the Lakers 3Peat, Spurs and Pistons (4 man All-Star - shouldhave been 5).
Boston is good but this is a team who couldn't win a game on the road in the playoffs last year but any of those teams can be argued to be better than thisBoston team.

i'll give you the lakers 3peat, it would be tough with shaq. BUT... no, the 98 bulls don't count, this is 2009. spurs and pistons would begood matchups for these celtics, but were not 'clearly' better. none of those teams ever started off 27-2. we deserve to be up there...

the '00-'01 lakers swept all the teams they faced throughout the playoffs and only lost one game to philly in the finals

i'd take the 3 peat lakers and the '04 pistons over this boston team
