Osgood Slaughter Disease is the inflammation of the patellar tendon where the knee meets the top of the tibia (shinbone). 1) Concealing the brand name, Grid, from public display.
2) Displaying the inner red color creating a trademark image.

Only speculation, but I think MJ didn't wear the sleeve between late '96-'98 because Grid probably had discontinued their line, making way for McDavid.

I got one from McDavid in the late 00s that had the red interior, but I don't think they make it anymore. I'm almost certain Mike was wearing a knee, not calf, sleeve, but just pulled down.
