No. It's actually a pretty great city from nightlife to history to music, etc.
However, having lived in and around the city most of my life (I live in NYC now), I can firmly say the females are not all that great.

Not sure how old you are or what you're looking for, but Manayunk is a spot where a lot of post-grad people move to. Not directly in center city, but it's very accessible. Haven't been there recently, so Josednk may be right about a lot of construction and stuff around that area though.

I hate absolutely HATE Manayunk but it will appeal to some; it's very pretentious and everyone is trying to one up the next

you clearly don't know anything

Cherry Hill was where I lived in the 90's when I worked in Philly. It was ok. I then lived in West Chester in the 2000's when working for another company and it was fine.

Hit me up with any questions. I've lived in Philly for 28 years.
How much would you like to spend in rent? That will cut a lot of things out immediately.

lol, you spend 4 years in a place and that makes your opinion more valid than people who have been their for a lifetime. Philly is no more grimey than NY, CHicago, LA, Miami etc

university city

The people were very friendly and there was a lot to do when I went there. I don't think I'd mind living there if I could find a spot that's in the cut.

philly is worse. i went to temple from 06-11 and more cops have been shot and killed than in the last 10 yrs in nyc (im a nyer). and a number of those cops were in north philly. every major city has its grimey parts, but some way more than others. being black in nyc can be rough, but i've never felt it harder than in philly. too many Ns out there mess it up for the rest of us with their fkin flash mobs n !@#!.

you gotta be weary of them little goons as young as 11 in that city

Bold = This I don't get when people do this when they know dang well they probably only hit up the tourist type spots in their 4 yrs. People making it seem like you have to wear a bulletproof here when that's just not the case.
edit: I'm honestly convinced Sreggie your just a scary person and it's not a shot at you but these flash mob cats are young like you said but if you worried about your safety from a bunch of skinny jean, 90's clothing, just want to dance cats you have to be a scary.

Please. Flash mobs? Are we really talking about that? Flash mobs in philly are nothing but high school herbs with nothing better to do. You were really intimidated by that? hahahahahahaha.

Iverson: "Flash mobs? We're talking about flash mobs?"

And yeah if you never left Temple campus, you would think Philly is horrible because Temple is in one of the crappiest parts of the city. There are dozens and dozens of areas in Philly that aren't bad at all.

Anyone from Philly been to the Parks Casino by Franklin Mills? How is it?

Every time I drive there on my way to Franklin Mills that place be CALLING me.

Notice that the people who have bad things to say about Philly are New Yorkers. If history serves us, they hate everything outside of the tri-state so I'd take their opinions with a grain of salt.

At the same time, there is some hometown bias in here too, so you take that for what it's worth.

Being as objective as I can be, enjoy the summer and fall in the city. Don't stray into a neighborhood you're not comfortable in. Eat a cheesesteak (Jim's, Lorenzo's). Visit the sports complex (There's going to be a championship this year, mark my words). And just enjoy your life in a new place.

I've been to Parx, of course it's no Atlantic City, but its alright.  You should try to make the drive to Harrah's Chester, although the place is narrow it's absolutely beautiful.

And as for OP, you should check out South Philly, there's an area I believe is called Passyunk Square.  Completely safe area, basically another hipsterville but instead its like a strip.

Even though Harrahs is literally across fro ma correctional facility

Honestly, if you are looking at the suburbs and Pennsylvania isn't necessarily a must, you could also live on the Jersey side, in areas such as Cherry Hill, Haddonfield, or Collingswood, which are quaint towns, and the two latter have small areas "in town" with restaurant areas that are nice to walk around, and have access to the PATCO high speed line which will take you over to the city and is excellent if you live in Center City.

Also as Stillin said, Conshohocken is a good area to live in and it's an easy commute to the city. I lived there when I got out of college, and it's a nice touch of the best of both worlds as it's a good combination of city and suburbs. I also agree with him in not suggesting Manayunk. It's a good population of the college and post-college douche-class of the area, and a high concentration of some of the most vomitous personalities in the tri-state area.

Not sure if anyone mentioned it yet, but there are areas in South Philadelphia that are excellent now, and very affordable to live in, without being too dangerous. If I were to move back, this would probably be the area I would move to, and the food/nightlife along E. Passyunk are probably my favorite in the city.

living: art museum/fairmount area will be a short train ride to temple hospital for you on the sub.  really nice area to live--short walk to center city... blocks to the art museum-- few cool bars in the area

crime: every city has it-- coming here from DC, I've found that the crime is much more concentrated here than it was in DC-- DC just had mad random violence when I lived there-- with that said, art museum/fairmount, rittenhouse/old city (pricey), center city (pricey), northern libs, university city, parts of west philly are safe places I'd recommend living in.

overall I really enjoy living here-- the food is second only to NY.. especially since we have a ton of BYO spots and we're not pretentious-- people are mad down to earth here... passionate and knowledgeable sports fans, good art scene with lots of music... I think you'll really enjoy your time here.  The folks who trash Philly are probably from east bumble Minnesota (no offense) who have nothing better to do than hate on big cities.

as for sandwiches:
Jims> Pats>       Genos
DiNics + Paesanos > anyone else
