If its free drinks which is what is usually is around college town I do around $2 bucks for a drink or maybe 5 for 3, which the bartenders there think is a good amount because they always show love. If I go to a nicer place Ill step it up to around 3-4 a drink at least for the first few rounds.

I ask this because it seems like some people dont even tip, even on on free drinks.

I give a buck or two, but then again when you go out to certain places in NYC drinks are already $9 and above [IMG]

I always tip at least a dollar, but I try to tip more if I know I'm going to be drinking alot so i can get stronger drinks or even free ones, but I'm starting to realize that it doesn't even matter. I've been tipping for years and never have I gotten any kind of free drinks or even stronger drinks.

If I'm drinking heavily, I'll give them a dollar + the coins every other drink.

That's the thing if you frequent a place the bartenders will definitely show you love. Girl I talked to put me hip to this. I've been out with her and seen insanely cheap tabs because they've tipped the bartender very well in the past. I use to tip just a dollar or 2 per drink but then i realized that they get paid the same as waiters, so they really depend on those tips.

Actually went out drinking 2 nights in a row this weekend and both times I got a round of free drinks or free shots. Downtown areas most bartenders wont really respect you if you tip a dollar or so a drink. I think its a bigger rip off having to pay the 20% mandatory for bottle service. I mean sometimes the girls will pour you drinks but other times the girls will just ask if you need something an dip.

grabbing a beer? whenever i buy a round of 3+ i usually only tip a buck or two.

but if its for a mixed drink, i'll try to tip pretty generously. i figure i'll make up for it when they start loading the drinks with more liquor as the night goes on.

in my experience, the better the tip the more generous the pours are.

Yeah it also depends on the bartender, if he/she makes solid drinks and is a great mixologist and could hold a conversation I'll fork over a little more.

Also If you plan on frequenting a bar you need to put up a little more, bartenders remember that stuff

When the bar is crowded and you're getting skipped over me dont be mad. Same **** happens at barbershops. I walked in on the day before valentines day and skipped around 7 people because my barber respects me. The stuff adds up when its crunch time and their services dictates your happiness.

I will automatically give bartenders a dollar per drink and I'll increase the amount depending on how friendly they are.

A dollar per beer, mixed drink, or shot

    $3 for a pitcher

If you frequent a bar enough, tip every time you order something, and develop a friendly relationship with the bartender(s), you eventually will get free drinks or discounted drinks in my experience. Also get served very quickly no matter how packed it is.
