It's done for one of two reasons.

Either people with lower models trying to hide that fact.

Or someone who just likes a cleaner, badge-free backside.

why do people feel embarrassed about having a lower model? no matter which # you have theyre still better than majority of cars on the road. and alot of people choose lower models for personal preference/needs. for example my dad had to compromise and get a 5 series instead of a 7 cause my mom doesnt like driving big cars, and shes planning to buy her own 3 series soon.

This. I debadged my IS300 and just left the L in the middle. Looks much cleaner
